Sample Outreach Letters

Below are two samples of letters. You can use one as a starting point, but the best letters will reflect your own individual personality. Just be yourself, be sincere, and people will respond. Write from the heart and tell your story.

Sample Letter 1:

Dear Matthew,

In memory of my sister Stephanie I have set up a Memorial Fund to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

I have come to learn that what Stephanie was struggling with is not rare and over 38,000 Americans die by suicide a year and 20 million suffer from depression. By creating this Memorial Fund I hope to raise awareness of the serious threat that mental illness can pose and the treatment options that can help people overcome it. If one person can be saved from the illness that killed Stephanie, my efforts to raise money for this cause in her memory will be worthwhile.

I am writing to you today to ask for your support of Stephanie’s Memorial Fund. A gift of any size will help AFSP continue their efforts to prevent suicide.

Thank you for taking the time to read this note and for being a part of my life as we all grieve the loss of Stephanie

Sincerely,
Carol

Sample Letter 2:

Dear Matthew,

As you may know, our sister Stephanie passed away on Wednesday. Stephanie was a beautiful person inside and out and she will be missed by all of us.

We are asking loved ones in lieu of flowers to make a donation to a Memorial Fund that we have established through the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

Stephanie’s funeral service will be held at the Liberty Funeral Home in New York, NY on May 15th.

Thank you for supporting AFSP so another family doesn’t have to experience the pain of losing a loved one.

Sincerely,
Carol
