The Out of the Darkness Community Walks are 3-5 mile walks taking place in hundreds of communities across the country this year, with the proceeds benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). By walking in the Out of the Darkness Community Walks, you will be walking with thousands of other walkers nationwide to raise money for AFSP's vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, and provide support for survivors of suicide loss. In deciding to walk you are taking us a step closer to making suicide prevention a national priority.
To register for this event click the Register Now button to get started! Once you have registered you will have your own personal fundraising page to help you with your fundraising efforts as well as watch your progress!
This year’s Chico Community Walk will traverse a 9-block route in downtown Chico, less than a mile. There will be a short program in the plaza both before and after the Walk.
You can create or join a Walk Team as well if you would like and the Walk Team raising the highest amount in donations as of Friday, September 13th, will have the privilege of carrying the "Out of the Darkness Walk" banner during the Walk.
This year’s Chico Community Walk will feature a raffle with prizes from local businesses and supporters. Every registered walk participant will receive a raffle ticket upon check-in at the event. The raffle will be held near the end of the event.
We will have the Memory Tree again at this year’s event and we encourage all participants and attendees to participate in this special activity. There will be paper “leaves” at the event for everyone to write their messages to loved ones and the community and you are welcome to bring photographs to place on the Memory Tree as well. (Please be sure that you do not bring original or one-of-a-kind photographs to use and that all photos are 3X5” or smaller)
We will also have the leaves from past years’ Memory Trees and photographs on display in albums near this year’s display.
A number of local organizations dedicated to suicide prevention and awareness will staff resource tables during the event. Talk to representatives and pick up literature after checking in at the registration tent.
AFSP is almost entirely volunteer driven, and we could not put on this great event each year without help from supporters just like you. If you’d like to help us plan or put together any part of the walk, or even volunteer to help out on the day of the event itself, we’d love to have you. Contact the Walk Committee at email@example.com for details.
We can always use support securing donations, sponsors and volunteers.
