Dedicate a Memorial Sign for Loved Ones – This year, we are offering the opportunity for walkers to dedicate a sign in memory of a loved one lost to suicide. These signs will be placed along the route as a memorial to those we have lost and as a reminder of why we fight to bring the issue of suicide out of the darkness, remove the Stigma Of Suicide, break the Silence Of Suicide, and eliminate the Shame Of Suicide. For a $50 donation, a sign will be created in memory of your loved one and personalized with a message or quote. After the walk is finished, you are welcome to take your sign home. Please visit http://afsp.donordrive.com/participant/MemorialSigns to make your donation today or to read more about the Memorial Signs. Click HERE for a Memorial Sign order form.
||First 2 Teams to register 10 people and raise $2,000 will get their team name on the Event T-shirt. – As a reminder, anyone who personally raises $150 gets a free event t-shirt.|
Honor Beads Booth - As part of the Broward Out of the Darkness walk we wear what are called Honor Beads which to the naked eye might appear to just be Mardi Gras beads but to a walker, crew member or volunteer they have much more meaning. For many, the walk is a journey of remembrance – a time to acknowledge the ways suicide, depression, and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. Various colored honor beads recognize your personal connection to the cause and help you to connect with others who know just how you feel. Honor beads are distributed before the walk and are included in the Opening Ceremony. The colors and what they signify are as follows:
Remembrance Activity - "I Walk For . . . " remembrance activity. Survivors of suicide loss share written memories of their loved ones with others, or simply pause for a quiet moment of reflection. We are also hoping to hold short 1-2 minute interviews with any of the walkers interested in answering the question: “Why I walk?”
“LET’S STOP SUICIDE IN ITS TRACKS” SHOE DRIVE – For this year's Broward Out of the Darkness Community Walk, to commemorate those lives lost to suicide, I want everyone to bring a pair of shoes to the Broward Out of the Darkness Walk. The shoes should represent people from every walk of life, military, children, teens, women, men, working boots, men's dress shoes, women's high heels, gym shoes, sandals, slippers, house shoes, etc. I seek to accomplish several things with this exhibit, I want the shoes to represent our loss, our grief, our struggles, and our mission to prevent suicide:
After the Walk, those shoes left behind will be donated to a charitable organization.
Putting a Face On Suicide Exhibit – Nova Southeastern University has agreed to have an exhibit of posters created by Mike Purcell after he lost his son to suicide. The Posters capture statistics and puts a face to those statistics. They will be on display around campus and in the library a week prior to our Walk, and during our walk.
