Information tables hosted by local businesses and non-profit organizations will open at 3:00 pm. Our younger Walkers, and those who are young-at-heart, will be able to
enjoy free craft activities at the Walk.
Please remember to pick up your Honor Beads at the Walk to acknowledge your personal connection to the cause and to help you identify with others who may know just how you feel.
This year we are offering the opportunity for walkers to share their story and honor the memory of their loved one by crafting a quilt square for an AFSP Lifekeeper Memory Quilt. It's easy to do—no sewing skills are needed,
AFSP Lifekeeper Memory Quilts are collaborative tributes created by survivors of suicide loss that are publicly displayed at local and national events in order to put a human face on the tragedy of suicide and the devastating toll it has taken on our families and communities. Each quilt is comprised of fabric squares that have been crafted by different survivors with photos, drawings, text, or embroidery in memory of loved ones who have taken their lives.
For more information on AFSP Remembrance Quilts, including how to submit your square, click here.
Please note: All squares must be submitted no later than July 15, 2014 to provide our volunteers enough time to have your square sewn onto the quilt for display at the walk.
The theme for this year's walk is "Remembrance." On the day of the walk, prior to the opening ceremony, be sure to take a moment to share your stories, memories, and photos with the community by adding them to the DC Book of Remembrance. Let the community know for whom you’re walking.
The wall will be unveiled during the closing ceremony.
Please help us to keep the memories of our loved ones alive by adding your memories to the Wall.
This year is the first year we are attempting to have an interactive participant wall actively updating and displaying your photos and messages!
It’s easy- all you have to do is use the hashtag #AFSPDCwalk2014 on any Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter posts that you would like us to include.
We will be showing all social media uploads that include our hashtags posted anytime between now and the walk.
Social media sites are a great way to let friends and family know why you’ve chosen to participate in the walk this year as well as a perfect starting place for your fundraising efforts. Tweet, post, update, and promote the walk and let everyone know your fundraising goal!
Some ideas for social media posts include:
Most importantly…be creative, and be sure to include the tag #AFSPDCWalk2014 in all your posts!
