*Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk during the check-in times listed above. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walks are the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's (AFSP) signature fundraising campaign, bringing together family, friends, colleagues, and supporters at 3-5 mile walks in hundreds of communities across the country.

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Community Walks, you join the effort with thousands of people to raise funds and awareness for AFSP's vision to create a world without suicide.

Raise $150 by October 11th and receive a 2014 Out of the Darkness Walk t- shirt!  Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you can turn in cash and check donations at the Registration tents on the day of the Walk.



Dogs are welcome at the Walk! Register your four-legged friend, putting            PET as their last name and for a $10 donation you will receive a FREE         AFSP Pooch Bandana!



8:30 am – Resource Fair and Survivor Activities Open

9:00 am – 10:00 am – Walkers Check-In

10:00-10:25 am – Opening Ceremonies

10:30-12:00 – Walk followed by Closing Ceremony



Make sure to arrive early to allow time to explore the Community Resources area! Information tables hosted by AFSP, Grass Roots, and will be open at 8:30 a.m. This is your opportunity to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss.



Please remember to pick up your            Honor Beads to acknowledge your       personal connection to the cause                 and help you to identify with others              who may know just how you feel.

Starting at 8:30 and continuing during registration,  

  • Do yoga with a personal trainer.
  • Visit the Resource Fair
  • Visit with adoptable dogs from the Howard County Animal Control & Adoption Center.
  • Visit with pet therapy dogs to experience the “unconditional love” of these special animals trained to “comfort”.

At the end of the walk we will gather around The Tree of Life for a brief closing ceremony.


If you are a survivor of suicide loss, please bring picture(s) to hang on the Tree of Life (you will get them back). We will have craft supplies and cut-out butterflies that you will be able to decorate and hang on the Tree of Life in honor of your loved one.
