The Out of the Darkness Community Walk follows the Willamette River that runs through the center of Portland. We will be heading north on the waterfront bike path toward Steel Bridge and continuing on the other side of the river on the Eastbank Esplanade heading south back to Hawthorne Bridge and joining us back at our walk start site. The route is roughly 3 miles, fairly flat and each of the bridge crossings has a stair or ramp choice.
The route is not technically challenging, has very little elevation change, and is wheelchair friendly throughout the majority of its length. If you or members of your team would like to attend the walk and be a part of the day’s events but do not wish to actually walk for physical or other concerns, there will be volunteers and attendees who remain at the staging area to welcome the volunteers back.
Raise $150 by October 4th and receive a 2014 Out of the Darkness Walk t- shirt!
Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you can turn in cash and check donations at the Registration tents on the day of the Walk.
We are a pet friendly event! Dogs are welcome at the Walk! Stop by the Paws for Prevention table at the walk to "register" your four-legged friend, and for a $10 donation you will receive a FREE AFSP Pooch Bandana!

Teams with 5 or more members registered by August 29th and that raise a total of at least $1000 (total for team by 8/29) will have their team name featured on the back of the official Portland Out of the Darkness Walk T-Shirt!
Top Team Recognition
The Top Fundraising Team of 2014 will carry the walk banner on Walk Day and will receive a VIP area at the 2014 Portland Out of the Darkness Walk. Top Fundraising Team is announced/notified the day before the walk.
Top Walker Recognition
The individual walker* who raises the most money by August 29th can receive a dedication 'In memory of someone' or 'In support of someone' on the back of the Portland Out of the Darkness Walk T-Shirt*This walker is not affiliated/registered member of any team.
Walkers who raise $100 between NOW and August 31 will receive a special gift on walk day! You will receive an email during the week beginning Monday September 1, if you have reached this target.
We will have our Memorial Garden all participants are welcome to bring a photo of their loved ones to place on this display. Note: please bring copies of your photo that are not originals in case of accidental damage.
Honor Beads will be available to all participants and you are welcome and encouraged to take beads to wear on the day of the walk. If you would like to know more about the Honor Beads, click here to find out what they signify.
Volunteer with us on Walk Day and help us make the Portland Out of the Darkness Community Walk a success. Our walk is planned and managed by Volunteers just like you, and we would love to have your help on the day of the walk.

Information tables hosted by local businesses and non-profit organizations will open at 8:30 a.m. This is your opportunity to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss.
*Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk during the check-in times listed above. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.
