My mother, Donna Pittman, when she was 3 years old on Easter 1958.
On April 8, 2009, I received a phone call no son wants. The local sheriff's department in my hometown in Georgia, where my mom still lived, called to inform me they found my mother in her apartment dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Her life-long struggle with mental illness finally got the best of her.
The story of my mother is not unique. One person dies by suicide in the U.S. every 14 minutes. Nearly 1 million more attempt it every year. Suicide is the tenth-leading cause of death in this country, and it's largely an unrecognized problem because its stigma make many are afraid to talk about it.
That's why I'm dedicating myself to raise money and awareness about suicide in my mother's name for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. I've set a goal to raise $1,000 for the nonprofit AFSP before I run in this year's Boston Marathon. The race is April 16, a mere two days after the third anniversary of the scattering of her ashes.
It takes a lot of will to end your own life. I can think of few things more tragic than completely losing the will to live.
AFSP dedicates itself to reducing to loss of life to suicide. Your money supports scientific research in the causes and prevention of suicide, education and outreach, support for survivors of those lost to suicide and many other efforts.
Suicide is preventable. Most suicidal people want to live. They see alternative to their problems. Most suicidal people give warning signals of their intentions, but others are often unaware of the significance of these warnings or unsure what to do about them.
I hope you will consider supporting this cause. Any contribution will help the work of AFSP, and all donations are 100% tax deductible.
