Dear Friend,

I love you Daddy,and there is not a day goes by that I do not think of you and wish for one more hug. There are too many of us that know people who struggle with mental illness and have lost family and close friends to suicide. After losing my dad to suicide in April 2004, I needed to find a way to help others recognize that suicide is not the answer to their problems and to help stop another family from having to go through this same tragic situation!!

In 2006, myself and a few others found a way to do this and that was by starting the first Orlando walk and from that - the start of the first Central Florida Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which now covers 8 counties.

Right now, in our Fifth year, the AFSP-Central Florida Chapter www.afsp.org/cfl is actively educating community members in the eight counties we serve about mental health conditions and suicide. We also bring support to those that have been affected by the suicide death of a loved one.

Do you know that suicide is the 9th leading cause of death in Floridians? In 2009, in the state of Florida, 2,854 individuals died by suicide. In the eight counties we serve, 536 human beings ended their lives in 2009. That's almost 20% of all suicide deaths within Florida.

Thank you so much to all my family and friends who have donated, volunteered, and participated in the previous walks, and have given me moral support along the way, especially my husband Mike. I hope you will support our cause again in the 2012 walk!

I know it will take a lifetime to process losing my dad, but being a part of this walk helps me to honor his life and help others too.
