Dear Family & Friends,
As most of you know, this will be our 4th year to organize the Out of the Darkness Walk here in Nashville. The date is scheduled for September 14, 2013.
We started as 8 survivors of suicide planning a small event in memory of 4 loved ones, but it has turned into so much more. The last 3 walks raised over $100K, with half of the funds supporting national research programs and the other half helping programs locally.
More importantly, our goal is to increase awareness for prevention, remove the stigma associated with mental and emotional health and give people a place to turn...whether a survivor of suicide or an individual with personal struggles, the event gives the opportunity for people to come together to celebrate the lives of loved ones and hopefully prevent further tragedies.
The support we have received is amazing and has given us the opportunity to form an AFSP Chapter for Middle Tennessee. After attending the AFSP leadership convention, I am more motivated than ever to support this organization and what they are doing for suicide prevention. Suicide is a growing concern with more than 36,000 people in the U.S. in a year taking their own life, which means every 14.2 minutes someone in the United States dies by suicide. It is this country's 10th leading cause of death and nearly 1,000,000 people make a suicide attempt every year.
So, please help us continue to provide a place for anyone affected by this sad and growing concern. Any contribution will help the work of AFSP, and all donations are 100% tax deductible. www.afsp.org
