Melanie Miller

Dear Friend,

I will be participating in the 2012 Disneyland® Half Marathon and raising funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to support vital local and national suicide prevention efforts. I would appreciate any support that you give me for this worthwhile cause. Your donation will inspire me and help those who need it most. I work with people in my daily life who are affected by suicide one way or another and this cause is very close to my heart.

AFSP is at the forefront of research, education and prevention initiatives designed to reduce loss of life from suicide. With more than 36,000 lives lost each year in the U.S. and over one million worldwide, the importance of AFSP's mission has never been greater, nor your support more urgent.

I hope you will consider making a donation to this event. Any contribution will help the work of AFSP, and all donations are 100% tax deductible.

Donating online is safe and easy! To make an online donation please click the "Support This Participant" button on this page.

Some facts about suicide:

Many who attempt suicide never seek professional care. There are twice as many deaths due to suicide than HIV/AIDS. Between 1952 and 1995, suicide in young adults nearly tripled. Over half of all suicides occur in adult men, ages 25-65. Suicide rates in the United States are highest in the spring. For young people 15-24 years old, suicide is the third leading cause of death. 80% of people that seek treatment for depression are treated successfully. 15% of those who are clinically depressed die by suicide. *There are an estimated 8 to 25 attempted suicides to 1 completion.

DID YOU KNOW?

For every $50 I raise, AFSP can provide educational materials to 25 people, emphasizing the importance of early identification and treatment for those suffering from depression and other disorders that put them at risk.

For every $100 I raise, AFSP can educate a mental health professional or primary care physician about the warning signs of suicide; they, in turn, will reach hundreds (maybe thousands)of people.

For every $500 I raise, AFSP can train a new Survivor of Suicide support group facilitator, and the members of the group will be given a chance to be with other survivors who understand, and will know that they are not alone.
