Oakland Walk

Dear Friends,

Thank you for visiting my page and thank you for your continued support.  Once again this year I am raising money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to raise money for education, outreach, and research to prevent others from taking their own lives by suicide.  I walk in memory of Ira Klapper, my fiance, and friend and family to so many of you, some of whom also walk for him.  He was an incredible person who was giving, kind, outgoing, fun loving, and made loving other people to the greatest degree appear effortless and natural.  Every year at this time I'm struck by the incredible irony that someone who wouldn't hesitate to give someone the shirt off his back, who gave without being asked, couldn't ask any of us to be there for him and shied away from getting help he so desperately needed.  I walk because I don't want others to feel the loss I have felt.  I walk because his memory lives on in all those of us who walk in his memory. And I walk because in some way, I'm continuing his message of giving to others the things he would never ask for himself.

Losing Ira changed my life forever.  I was and still am incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by friends, family, and loved ones who I know will always be there for me no matter what I need.  I know that Ira had the same love and support that he just could not see because he was so blinded by his own depression and sense of despair, and I know that no one should ever have to feel the hole that suicide rips in the fabric of life.  Please donate to support AFSP.  Together we can support research that helps identify those treatments and programs that are most effective, educate others about mental illness and the stigma associated with it, and provide support for survivors of suicide.  Thank you so much for your continued support.
