I have, as many of you know, personally suffered from anxiety, and know many who have suffered, or who are currently suffering from depression, anxiety, or some other form of mental health issue. It can be difficult to seek out help when we struggle with mental health issues, like depression. Emotional trauma is not so easily recognizable as our outward physical injuries are, but that doesn't make it any less real, or any less serious. It happens all too often that we don't know when someone is struggling with depression until they've chosen suicide.

In a recent study by the Department of Veterans Affairs, at least 22 veterans commit suicide each day. As the sister of a soldier, and the child of veterans, this particular statistic hits home for me. But, PTSD, anxiety, and depression affect people of all ages and backgrounds. According to this study by the CDC, in 2011, suicide was the 10th leading cause of deaths in the United States, with suicide rates on the rise since 2000. That means that, in 2011, every 13.3 minutes, someone died by committing suicide.

I'm trying, in my own small way, to raise awareness about suicide—both outside and within the gun owner community. I have personally had to deal with the devastation suicide causes in my family and my circle of friends, and I know of many others who have had the same heartbreaking experience. I believe, as a community, we can—and should—reach out to one another, and encourage others to reach out during times of depression, suffering, and pain, to avoid the tragic loss suicide causes.

I am going to run a half marathon (13.1 miles) on October 4th, 2014, to help raise awareness for suicide prevention. I'll broadcast the entire run on my treadmill live via http://new.livestream.com/fateofdestinee. What I'd like to ask you is for donations—in any amount—to sponsor my endurance event. All the proceeds will go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Let's reach out together to help prevent suicides.
