Why We Walk

With the 2019 walk just around the corner, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for building this event to the success that it is with over 7000 lives joining together to save one life at a time. This exponential growth will support our progress to reduce suicide 25% by 2025.

The highlight of the walk has always been for us uttering our loved one’s name to the cheers of the crowd. The question is, how do we continue to put a name to our loss as participation explodes. We thought of putting the names up in lights or hiring an airplane to do skywriting. And then it hit us while sitting at a Phillies Game watching the scroll of sponsors and birthdays on the Jumbotron.

That’s right, AFSP has secured our very own Jumbo Tron to feature the names of our loved ones on a continuous scroll throughout the event! It will be quite the sight at the left side base of the steps as you gaze up at the Art Museum.
Does this replace the experience of taking the stage to give voice to our loss? NO
Does it soothe the constant ache? NO
Does it change history? NOT the past, but maybe the future.

Team Captains, we do this walk, the fundraising, the education, and the awareness to save the next family from experiencing our pain. And the more we grow the walk, the better chance we have of saving lives. And as the message spreads, we are faced with the task of accommodating the increased number of families so they too can share their NAME. We must continue to utter their NAMES because this is how we make an impact.

While this change represents progress and our success in changing the messaging around suicide, it also represents the sacrifice we all make to accommodate the volume of people participating. Captains, I need your help to make this work by following the format and due date in support of this process. We love you. We respect your pain. We credit you for growing this event to this level. We thank you!  And we ask you to support this change so we can continue to grow and impact suicide with our message.

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.

There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones.

Thank you for your support! We look forward to seeing you at the walk!
