Welcome to the Hampton Roads Out of the Darkness Walk Series

Thank you for walking with us in 2019. Join the fight to stop suicide by donating online today. Donations are accepted through December 31.

Newport News Walk - September 15, 2019

Suffolk Walk - September 28, 2019

Virginia Beach Walk - October 26, 2019

When you walk in an Out of the Darkness Walk, you join the effort to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy and support survivors of suicide loss. As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025. We need YOU. Every dollar raised gets us one step closer to a world without suicide.

Where does the money you raise go?

Out of the Darkness Walks provide an opportunity for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Virginia Chapter to serve local communities across Virginia by giving people the courage to open up about their own loss or struggle, and the platform to help create a culture that is smart about mental health.

When you raise funds for one of our three walks in Hampton Roads, you help bring suicide prevention education, outreach, and healing support to your hometown community.

Host a Suicide Prevention Training

Supported by the funds raised over the last 14 years of hosting walks in the Hampton Roads area, AFSP is proud to present suicide prevention education programs to our community. We offer free training to companies, churches, school or community groups.  Click here to learn about our programs.  Click here to make a program request.

Consider hosting a Talk Saves Lives program.  It is a 45-minute community presentation that covers the general scope of suicide, the research on prevention, and what people can do to fight suicide.

Our More than Sad, Teen Depression and Preventing Teen Suicide program can be presented to high school students, parents and educators.

We also provide safeTALK and ASIST classes throughout the year.  To find one near you, visit afsp.org/virginia and check out our upcoming events.  If there is not one near you, contact our education committee at virginia@afsp.org to see if one can be made available.
