Welcome to the New Jersey Out of the Darkness Experience and Program Info Page
#BeTheVoice of suicide prevention in New Jersey
While all of the New Jersey Out of the Darkness Walks are going to look different this year, our mission to Save Lives and Bring Hope to Those Affected by Suicide has not changed. We are a strong and resilient community, united in our effort to fight suicide, raise awareness, educate our communities, support those who have lost loved ones, and support those with lived experience. We use our voices and share our stories to provide hope.
We invite you to join us virtually on Sunday, November 1st for our statewide New Jersey Out of the Darkness Experience. We are in the process of planning a special virtual event where we will come together to remember loved ones lost to suicide, embrace those with lived experience and honor the efforts of so many who work together to stop suicide. Everyone who is registered for a fall New Jersey Community Experience will be invited to join this event so there is no additional registration required. More details will be announced soon about this virtual experience including ways you can be involved.

Our community has always been the heart of the Out of the Darkness Walks. Your safety and well-being will always be our top priority, and we are closely monitoring CDC and local guidelines as we map out our options for bringing you an experience of hope and healing this fall.
Though there are many unknowns, there are a few things we know for sure:
You belong to a strong community united in an effort to fight suicide while showing up for yourself, recognizing and honoring those you love, raising awareness, educating communities, supporting one another, and sharing hope.
We remain dedicated to providing you with opportunities to connect, heal, share stories, create impact, and show you that you are not alone.
Mental Health and suicide prevention are more important than ever, and we’re confident that with your help we can reach more people than ever before.

We realize that nothing can substitute the experience of coming together in person, and we will continue to seek ways in which we can do that safely. We hope you will register and join us. One thing we do know is that HOPE WILL NOT BE CANCELLED and cannot be POSTPONED! If you have any questions, please reach out to New Jersey Area Director Elizabeth Clemens at email@example.com.
By featuring real stories and experiences, It’s Real conveys that depression and other mental health conditions are real illnesses that can be managed through specific treatments and interventions. It encourages students to be mindful of the state of their mental health, to acknowledge and recognize when they are struggling, and to take steps to seek help.
We hope it inspires you to have a #RealConvo today!
Talk Saves Lives is a community-based presentation that covers the general scope of suicide, the research on prevention, and what people can do to fight suicide.
Attendees will learn the risk and warning signs of suicide, and how together, we can help prevent it. Check out a 30 second promo video HERE.

Through our educational programs, we teach schools, communities, and workplaces how to best prevent suicide and create a culture that is smart about mental health. AFSP currently has over 30 educational programs. Many of these programs are brought to your local communities free of charge because of the funds raised from our Out of the Darkness Walks.
We provide the opportunity for local volunteers to be trained to present our community and school based programs such as Talk Saves Lives, More Than Sad, and It’s Real.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are giving both TSL and It’s Real as virtual presentations. If this is something that you are interested in, please reach out to me and we can discuss more. Our chapter will continue to host these educational programs virtually until we can together again in-person. Contact Area Director Elizabeth Clemens at email@example.com to inquire about scheduling a program in your community.

About our AFSP chapters
The grassroots work we do focuses on eliminating the loss of life from suicide by: delivering innovative prevention programs, educating the public about risk factors and warning signs, raising funds for suicide research and programs, and reaching out to those individuals who have lost someone to suicide.
As a part of AFSP’s growing nationwide network of chapters, we bring together people from all backgrounds who want to prevent suicide in our communities. Families and friends who have lost someone to suicide, vulnerable individuals, mental health professionals, clergy, educators, students, community/business leaders, and many others energize our chapters.
