Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.

Out of the Darkness Community Walk

Please park at 9861 Broken Land Parkway, Columbia, MD 21046 and follow the Out of the Darkness Direction signs. They will lead you through an underpass and to the registration area. Everyone over the age of 5 years needs to register for the event. Please make sure to arrive early to check out our resource tables and remembrance activities. After the opening ceremony, we will walk along Lake Elkhorn and surrounding neighborhoods as detailed below. The walk route is about 3.3 miles long, stroller and wheelchair accessible.  Volunteers will be placed along the route to guide the way. After the walk we will gather for the Closing Ceremony.

Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in additional cash or check donations at the registration table the day of the Walk. 



Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome at the event. AND - with a $10 donation, you can pick up an AFSP Pooch bandana at the Paws for Prevention Tent.



Make sure to arrive early to allow time to explore the resources area.
Information tables hosted by local businesses and non-profit organizations will open at 11:00 am. This will be an opportunity to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss.

Tree of Life:

Decorate a butterfly in remembrance of your loved one! You can write on it, add pictures, and other memories to be hung on the Tree of Life. We provide the butterflies and craft supplies; all you need to bring is a picture of your loved one.

Lifekeeper Memory Quilt:

For the first time The Howard County Out of the Darkness Walk will display a Lifekeeper Memorial Quilt. The quilts put a human face on the tragedy of suicide and its devastating toll on families and communities. If you have lost a loved one to suicide, you may want to bring family and friends together to create an AFSP Lifekeeper Memory Quilt panel to remember them. Each panel in the quilt tells the story of someone who took their life. The panels are lovingly stitched together, and the quilts are publically displayed at local and national events to remind us that no survivor of suicide loss stands alone.

Honor Beads:
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance and a walk that unites a community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. We all wear honor beads - each color shows our personal connection to the cause, and helps us identify others who understand our experience

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
