Thank you for supporting the decision to postpone this event from its originally scheduled date. We know that the rebuilding process will be a long one and our hearts go out to all who have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Please know that mental health and suicide prevention services are available. If you or anyone you know is in crisis, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1 (800) 273-TALK (8255).
Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until June 30th.
When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.
Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
Click the Register Now button at the top of the page to get started right away.
Registration will take place between 8:00am and 9:00am, and the program will begin at 9:00am. The venue is Brazos River Park in Sugar Land, TX (18427 Southwest Fwy, Sugar Land, TX 77479). You can view a map of the venue HERE, including location of parking lots and registration area.
The Fort Bend County Walk will take place rain or shine. Please dress accordingly, and we suggest bringing an umbrella and/or poncho if it looks like rain. There is limited cover at the venue.
This is a family friendly event. All ages are welcome! The event will feature a community resource fair, local speakers, an AFSP information booth, honor beads (more information HERE), and more.
The route is 3.1 miles in length, with the option for an abbreviated 1.5 mile route. Please note that this is a noncompetitive walk event.
Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome. Please be sure to clean up after them so we leave our venue in excellent condition.
Can I bring donations?
If you have received any donations (checks or cash), you can bring them to the walk and we will be sure they get added to your walk total. Please note that donations for the walk can also be made online through December 31st.
Funds go to local suicide prevention efforts in the Fort Bend County area through the Southeast Texas Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The event also supports AFSP's national priorities in research, public policy, and program development.
Please consider signing up HERE to help with one or more volunteer shifts at the event. If you sign up to volunteer, you will still be able to participate in the walk portion. We gladly sign off on community service hours for students.
Raise $150 by 02/24/2018 and receive an official Out of the Darkness Walk T-shirt!
Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in additional cash or check donations at the registration table the day of the Walk.
