Due to the number of South Texans directly and indirectly impacted by the recent storms and the community’s participation in recovery efforts, the walk has been rescheduled for February 17th.  This was a very difficult decision and our hearts go out to all who have suffered loss due to Hurricane Harvey.
We realize the rebuilding process will be a long one and we understand the community’s need to focus on relief efforts.  In the meantime, please know that mental health and suicide prevention services are available.  If you or anyone you know is in crisis, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline – 1 (800) 273-TALK (8255).
Suicide prevention programming will continue in our community.
Thank you for understanding and we look forward to your attendance in February and the at the events leading up to walk.

Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until June 30th.

Welcome to the Out of the Darkness Greater Houston Area Walk

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.

Click the Register Now button at the top of the page to get started right away.

Join us in solidarity, rememberance, and raising awareness to fight suicide by participating in the Out of the Darkness Community Walk along the Woodlands Waterway and join at Town Green Park on February 17, 2018.  This fundraising walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's local and national programs and its bold goal to reduce the annual rate of suicide 20% by 2025.

Our keynote speaker will be local community leader, Kim Hess, founder of Cassidy Joined for Hope, a local foundation dedicated to raising awareness for the prevention of teen suicide.  Kim has been pivotal in the area, working within her foundation to promote and advocate for teen mental health research, education, and programs in schools and local communities.  Look out for their tent at the walk for more information!

Advocating with us and providing resources will be very important organizations within the community such as Montgomery County Youth Services and Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare, as well as many other organizations that are directly involved with mental health services and suicide prevention in our region.  Look out for supporting individuals and companies that will be exhibiting at the walk to showcase their support for AFSP.

Healing activities and a kids' corner will be set up for walkers of all ages to participate in. The Blue Heart Garden is back again! If you don't have your loved one commemorated on a blue heart for the garden, there will be a tent nearby with a station for adding your lost one's name to a pre-constructed blue heart sign.

Another tradition we want to remind you about, is the shoe memorial. We will line up the shoes along the sidewalk that Art & Kustom Kreations will be decorating in chalk for us! Bring a new or saved pair of shoes to represent your lost loved ones.

New this year, will be photo memorials. If you choose, bring a printed photo of your lost one to remember to add to our photo memorial.

Special shout out to all First Responders! We want to celebrate and thank you this year. Please join us at the event and stop by and visit our First Responders booth where we will have warm coffee and breakfast, cupcakes and a special gift just for you. Let us treat you to show our appreciation for your heroism and dedication to saving lives.

Lone Star Parties will be providing 2 large inflatable bounce houses of fun for the children. Tikiz Shaved Ice and Trilogy Coffee will be on site for all of your cold and hot refreshment needs and we will also be joined by Tacos Ole Food Truck with a limited breakfast taco menu before the walk and complete lunch menu available following the walk.
