Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.

Walk Incentives

We're excited to share with you that teams that raise $2500 from now until end of day 9/21 will get their Team logo on the 2017 walk T-Shirt

Individuals who raise $500 or more from now until 9/30 will receive free parking at the walk.  

Don’t forget that the top fundraising team by Friday at 5pm the day before the walk gets to lead the walk and carry the walk banner and each participant who raises $150 or more gets a walk T-shirt! 


Fun Team Fundraising ideas:

Host a dinner party plus raffle event
You can host with friends and family and/or one with your coworkers. I'm doing one with a friend next month -- $20 for a drink and food. + $2 for a raffle ticket / 15 tickets for $10

Restaurant Support 
Ask a local restaurant to give you a portion of the days revenue (Chipotle is a good one to do this at.  They will donate 50% of proceeds) 

Please reach out to your walk chairs if you need support or materials. 

WALK ROUTE

The route starts and ends at the Santa Monica Pier. The 3 mile route goes south along the beach on Oceanfront Walk and then north on Ocean Avenue to the California Incline. The route returns to the pier through Palisades Park with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains.  It is fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.  

 

GETTING TO THE WALK!

Take Metro: The Santa Monica Pier is located a short 10 minute walk from the Exposition Line Metro Station. Take the train to the Downtown Santa Monica Station, and walk three blocks west to the pier entrance.  The Santa Monica Big Blue Bus Lines 7, 8, & 10 and LA Metro Bus Lines 20, 720 ,33, & 733 all  stop at the pier. 

There are several parking options if you plan on driving to Santa Monica.  There is limited metered parking on Ocean Avenue. Most lots are within a 10 minute walk of the pier.

Driving Directions:

Driving directions to Pier North Parking Lot 1 where the event is being held:  Don't rely on your navigation to get you to North parking lot 1.  Take Pico Ave. west to Appian Way.  Turn right on Appian Way and follow it to the end and you will be directed left to go into the parking lot.

PAWS FOR PREVENTION

 

Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome at the event. AND - with a $10 donation, you can pick up an AFSP Pooch bandana at the Paws for Prevention Tent.

RESOURCE FAIR

Make sure to arrive early to allow time to explore the resources area.
Information tables hosted by local businesses and non-profit organizations will open at 9:00am. This will be an opportunity to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES

We will have areas with walk signage and posters for photo opportunities.  Arrive early to take a team photo with our AFSP lifesaver!

ACTIVITIES OF HOPE AND HEALING

Create a heart to hang on our remembrance wall.  Bring a non-returnable 4x6 photo of your loved one. All supplies will be provided.  We will have information about adding squares to our Los Angeles Chapter quilt.  

                        

Honor Beads:
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance and a walk that unites a community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. We all wear honor beads - each color shows our personal connection to the cause, and helps us identify others who understand our experience

WALL OF HOPE

You’ll also be able to write an encouraging message to display on our wall of hope.
