Why Fundraising?

This is the first year for the Hoboken Out of the Darkness Walk! Although there is no fee to walk and there is not a fundraising requirement, every dollar raised helps the AFSP New Jersey chapter bring much-needed suicide prevention and support programs to our local communities. There are three small things you can do to kick-start your fundraising work:

  • Personalize your walker page online. Telling your story will make those who see your page feel more emotionally connected to you and the cause. If you're a team captain, be sure to personalize your team page!
  • Donate to yourself, even if just a modest sum of $20, to show others you are committed to the cause. It's easier to ask others for money if they see you have also donated.
  • Share your page and story with others. It's OK to ask for donations! And you may have to ask several times – that’s OK too!

This website is designed for online donations. On the day of the walk, you can also bring cash or checks (made out to “American Foundation for Suicide Prevention”). And don’t miss our Walker Central website for some great tips and some great social media apps to help you promote your walk participation.

About the Location:

This first Hoboken Out of the Darkness Community Walk will take place at Palmer Lawn on Stevens Institute of Technology. The GPS address is: 1 Castle Point Terrace, Hoboken, NJ 07030. We are working out parking details and will have more information to come soon. There is free street parking in Hoboken on Sundays.

We will start at Palmer Lawn, then south on Hudson to 5th , then crossing Sinatra, going south on Sinatra Dr. to Pier Park A, then back north up Sinatra Drive to the 14th St Pier, then west on 12th, south on Hudson and finish at Palmer Lawn.

What to Expect at the Walk:

The walk will take place rain or shine. We encourage walkers to arrive at 9 AM when registration opens, so that you have ample time to check-in and then enjoy all of the pre-walk activities we have to offer.

  • Pre-walk activities will include: wearable buttons; a temporary tattoo parlor; honor bead necklaces; learning more about AFSP and our local chapter; community partner tables; and more.
  • The walk is not competitive. After you are done walking, you may go about your day.

Honor Beads:
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance and a walk that unites a community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. We all wear honor beads - each color shows our personal connection to the cause, and helps us identify others who understand our experience

  • WHITE - LOST A CHILD
  • RED -  LOST A SPOUSE OR PARTNER
  • GOLD - LOST A PARENT
  • ORANGE - LOST A SIBLING
  • PURPLE - LOST A RELATIVE OR FRIEND
  • SILVER -  LOST FIRST RESPONDER / MILITARY
  • GREEN - STRUGGLED PERSONALLY
  • BLUE - SUPPORT THE CAUSE
  • TEAL - FRIENDS AND FAMILY OF SOMEONE WHO STRUGGLES

Online registration closes at noon the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.

Click the Register Now button at the top of the page to get started right away.

Thank you for your support! We look forward to seeing you at the walk!
