When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.
Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
Click the Register Now button at the top of the page to get started right away.
You have the option to walk 1.5 or 3 miles (1 or 2 loops). There are benches along the route for resting. The route is paved so strollers or wheelchairs will have no problem!
Download the Lansing/Capital Area SPONSORSHIP PACKET. With sponsorship opportunities starting at only $500, this is a perfect opportunity for large and small businesses to play a role in making suicide prevention a priority in the community.
Raise $150 by 09/30/2018 and receive an official Out of the Darkness Walk T-shirt!
Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in additional cash or check donations at the registration table the day of the Walk.
Make sure to arrive early to allow time to explore the resources area. Information tables hosted by local businesses and non-profit organizations will open at 9:30 am. This will be an opportunity to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss.
Bring a 10x10 tent and set up in a designated area to spend time together before and after the event. Bring picnic fixings for a wonderful lunch after the walk at the beautiful park. Think of it as tailgating before the event!
We will have an activity or two for the whole family! Something that you can take home with you to give hope and support after the event is over.
We will have a silent auction table with items donated by members of the community. The Silent Auction will begin at 9:30 am and will end when the opening ceremony begins. The winner of each auction item must be present to win.
Take your team photos with some of our #stopsuicide props to share on social media to spread awareness!
Be sure to bring a photo of your loved one to be displayed in the rememberence tent. Write a letter to your loved one.
Leave messages of hope for those who struggle with mental illness.
Everyone will be able to pick up honor beads that represent their journey and connection to the cause. We will also be doing an Honor Beads ceremony to highlight one person for each connection and share their stories.
Losing someone to suicide or mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.
Our eco-friendly memorial bubble release is a beautiful memorial to our loved ones. We send our thoughts and love in these bubbles to the ones we've lost.
Get your Be The Voice t-shirts, sweatshirts, tank tops, hats, and more!
Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome at the event. AND - with a $10 donation you can pick up an AFSP Pooch bandana at the Paws for Prevention tent.
Please help promote the event through your social media outlets! #OutoftheDarkness
