Welcome to the Out of the Darkness Pittsburgh Walk

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss. As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.

Click the Register Now button at the top of the page to get started right away.

Thank you for your interest in the Out of the Darkness Walk for the greater Pittsburgh region in 2018! Now in its 14th year and with over 2,000 walkers expected to gather, it's an amazing event to bring together the community to raise our voices for suicide prevention. Read below for more information about the family-friendly Pittsburgh walk and to get answers to frequently asked questions:

Although fundraising is optional and there is no minimum fundraising requirement (and no fee to walk), each dollar raised helps us deliver suicide prevention programs both in Western PA and nationally. With last year's Walk fundraising, our Western PA chapter was able to educate over 2,300 people in our area on suicide prevention (particularly in middle/high schools and on college campuses), as well as send our largest delegation yet to Harrisburg to advocate for public policy changes, hold our largest-ever Survivors of Suicide Loss conference in Pittsburgh, and contribute to over $4.6 million in scientific research grants awarded by AFSP on a national level.

There are 3 small things you can do to kick-start your fundraising work:

You are also welcome to hold your own third-party fundraiser and use those funds raised toward your individual or team goal. Contact us for supporting your private fundraiser: westernpa@afsp.org

This website is designed for online donations. On the day of the walk, you can also bring cash or checks (made out to “American Foundation for Suicide Prevention” or "AFSP"). And don’t miss our Walker Central website for some great tips and some great social media apps to help you promote your walk participation.

Check out some examples of the fundraising incentive “thank you” gifts in the past (the 2018 fall gifts will be announced soon). In addition, we have local incentives specific to the Pittsburgh walk:

  • Teams who raise at least $2,500 will be named a sponsor for an AFSP suicide prevention event in Western PA.
  • The 3 top individual fundraisers (teams or individuals) are invited to help us with the dove release at the conclusion of the opening ceremony.
  • The #4 top fundraiser (team or individual) will be invited to lead our walk by carrying the Out of the Darkness banner sign, along with several of our walk committee members.

The official Out of the Darkness Walk t-shirts are our "Thank You" gift for those who raise $150 on or before 08/25/2018 walk day.

The Pittsburgh walk t-shirt includes our major sponsors' logos on the back, so if you know a business who would like to be included, please have them contact our walk chair!

About the Location: Highmark Stadium is located at the Station Square complex next to the Gateway Clipper Fleet. The stadium is wheelchair accessible and is easy to access via the “T” light rail system, by bus, and by car. Ample parking is available for a nominal fee, typically <$10 (parking is controlled by the lot private owners). The walk is approximately 5K in length along the riverwalk trail, and we'll have a turn-around table marking the half-way point. Please be mindful that the walking trail is a public, mixed use trail -- so please be courteous to others on the trail. We expect over 2,000 walkers this year to hit the trail!

NOTE: Due to construction detours in the Station Square area this year, walkers may be directed to walk single file for a very brief period where the detour exists. We will have volunteers guiding your way.

What to Expect at the Walk: The walk will take place rain or shine. We encourage walkers to arrive at 9 AM when registration opens, so that you have ample time to check-in and then enjoy all of the pre-walk activities we have to offer.

  • Pre-walk activities will include: wearable buttons; a temporary tattoo parlor; honor bead necklaces; all-ages crafts in our Kids Zone; music; the AFSP merchandise store; learning more about AFSP and our local chapter; community resource fair; social media/photo station; and more.
  • Those in the LGBTQ+ community are invited to walk with our LGBTQ+ Pride team, which will meet up next to the AFSP tent before opening ceremonies. Join the team here
  • Walking alone? You don't need to! We have a "buddy team" at the walk -- it's a great way to meet new people too. The team will meet next to the suicide loss support group tents before opening ceremoneis.
  • Water will be available at the stadium, but no food. You are permitted to bring your own water bottle container to refill, but bottled water will also be available on the route. No outside food can be brought onto the stadium property, due to venue regulations.
  • Unfortunately, no pets are permitted in Highmark Stadium (except for service animals, but you must contact the walk chair in advance to coordinate service animal attendance).
  • Team captains are encouraged to bring a sign to use as a marker to assemble your team on the field. Any walker is invited to bring signs, photos, etc. to wear or carry while they walk.
  • Walk opening ceremony will start at approximately 10:30 AM and will last about 20 minutes, then the walk leaves the stadium for the riverwalk trail.
  • The walk is not competitive. You are not required to complete the entire 5K. And you walk at your own pace.
  • After you are done walking, you do not need to return to Highmark Stadium; you may go about your day. However, if you do return, we will have finish line "cheer squad" awaiting you and our AFSP store will remain open until 1:30 PM for merchandise purchases.
