Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Registration is free and open to the public. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.

Welcome to the Out of the Darkness Pittsburgh Walk

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss. As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.

ABOUT THE PITTSBURGH REGION WALK...

 

Thank you for your interest in the Out of the Darkness Walk for the greater Pittsburgh region in 2018! Now in its 14th year and with over 2,000 walkers expected to gather, it's an amazing event to bring together the community to raise our voices for suicide prevention. Read below for more information about the family-friendly Pittsburgh walk and to get answers to frequently asked questions:

WHY FUNDRAISING?

Although fundraising is optional and there is no minimum fundraising requirement (and no fee to walk), each dollar raised helps us deliver suicide prevention programs both in Western PA and nationally. With last year's Walk fundraising, our Western PA chapter was able to educate over 2,300 people in our area on suicide prevention (particularly in middle/high schools and on college campuses), as well as send our largest delegation yet to Harrisburg to advocate for public policy changes, hold our largest-ever Survivors of Suicide Loss conference in Pittsburgh, and contribute to over $4.6 million in scientific research grants awarded by AFSP on a national level.

This website is designed for online donations. On the day of the walk, you can also bring cash or checks (made out to “American Foundation for Suicide Prevention” or "AFSP"). PITTSBURGH WALK FUNDRAISING INCENTIVES

T-SHIRTS

The official Out of the Darkness Walk t-shirts are our "Thank You" gift for any individual walkers who raises $150 on or before 08/25/2018 walk day. They have our brand-new walk logo this year too, so don't miss your chance to earn yours!

The Pittsburgh walk t-shirt includes our major sponsors' logos on the back, so if you know a business who would like to be included, please have them contact our walk chair!

 

SPONSORSHIPS

It's also a great idea to let your employer know you'll be walking and to let them know we have sponsorship opportunities. Starting at only $500, businesses can show their support to the suicide prevention mission by contributing a tax-deductible financial gift as a sponsor. At the $2,500 sponsor level, the business name/logo will be included on the back of all the official Pittsburgh walk t-shirts. All sponsors receive brand visibility and recognition of their support. WALK LOCATION, ROUTE, AND EVENT INFORMATION...

 

About the Location: Highmark Stadium is located at the Station Square complex next to the Gateway Clipper Fleet. The stadium is wheelchair accessible and is easy to access via the “T” light rail system, by bus, and by car. Ample parking is available for a nominal fee, typically <$10 (parking is controlled by the lot private owners). The walk is approximately 5K in length along the riverwalk trail. Please be mindful that the walking trail is a public, mixed use trail -- so please be courteous to others on the trail. We expect over 2,000 walkers this year to hit the trail!

NOTE: Due to construction detours in the Station Square area this year, we will have a different walk route this year - but we are sure that you will really enjoy it!

What to Expect at the Walk: The walk will take place rain or shine. We encourage walkers to arrive at 9 AM when registration opens, so that you have ample time to check-in and then enjoy all of the pre-walk activities we have to offer.
