Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Registration is free and open to the public. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.
When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.
Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.

The Marked WALK ROUTE Begins and Ends at Lewis and Clark Landing. To begin, we’ll head North on the Riverfront Path, around the outside of GALLUP, West up Abbott Dr up to 10th Street, turning left and head South in front of Century Link Center to Capital Avenue, where the route turns left, heading East down Capital Ave , curving to 8th Street. From there, we will turn left on Dodge Street, over the train tracks, and following River Front Drive, Crossing at the appropriate cross areas back to Lewis and Clark Landing.

Each year, the Opening Ceremony at the Omaha Out of the Darkness includes a Balloon Release, with 9 bags of balloons, each containing 9 balloons, one of each of the Honor Colors. This year, we would like to honor the Top 4 Fundraising Individuals and Top 4 Fundraising Teams by asking them to release a set of balloons during the Opening Ceremony Balloon Release. The 9th bag of balloons that will be released by another group of people (Walk Committee). If a Top 4 Fundraiser and a Top 4 Fundraiser Team are the same person/people/team, they will be allowed to release more than one bag of balloons. We will ask the top fundraisers pre-Opening Ceremony to come up to the stage for the balloons and release instructions.

Make sure to arrive early to allow time to explore the resource center. Information tables hosted by local businesses and non-profit organizations will open at 11:00AM. This will be an opportunity to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss.
Kids Activities will include Lemonade the Balloon Twister, Temporary Tattoos, Ring Toss and MORE! Family Games will be available also! Including Jumbo Jenga, Beanbag Toss, Frisbee Toss & MORE!
GET YOUR KIDS IN ON THE FUNDRAISING ACTION!! The “Change for Change Challenge” IS BACK!! Collect your change and bring it over to the Kids Area on Walk Day! Volunteers will be on hand to count your change! The kiddo with the most change in your age category (0-5; 6-10; 11-16) wins an awesome prize!!!! Collections will end when pre-Opening Ceremony begins! START CHECKING THE COUCH CUSHIONS!!
Once again, this year we will have a Remembrance Wall. Please, bring a photo of loved ones you have lost, put it up in the Remembrance Wall, and take it back at the end of the event. We’ll have clips that will match Honor Bead colors to place the photos up on the walls.
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.
The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance and a walk that unites a community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. We all wear honor beads - each color shows our personal connection to the cause, and helps us identify others who understand our experience
