When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.
Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
Click the Register Now button at the top of the page to get started right away.
Although there is no fee to walk and no fundraising requirement, every dollar raised helps the AFSP Eastern MA Chapter bring much-needed suicide prevention and support programs to our local communities. There are 3 small things you can do to kick-start your fundraising work:
Personalize your walker page – Telling your story will make those who see your page feel more emotionally connected to you and the cause. If you're a team captain, be sure to personalize your team page too!
Donate to yourself – Even if just a modest donation of $20, it shows others you are committed to the cause. It's easier to ask others for money if they see you have also donated.
Share your page and story with others. It's OK to ask for donations! And you may have to ask several times – that’s OK too!
You are also welcome to hold your own third-party fundraiser and use those funds raised toward your individual or team goal. Contact us for supporting your private fundraiser: firstname.lastname@example.org. We can also help promote your event to other walkers and supporters..
Note: this website is designed for online donations. On the day of the walk, you can also bring cash or checks (made out to “American Foundation for Suicide Prevention” or "AFSP"). And don’t miss our Walker Central website for some great tips and some great social media apps to help you promote your walk participation.
84 cents of every dollar goes right into our programs. We are committed to bringing mental health and suicide prevention training to Easton schools, colleges, universities, community groups, and local corporations.
Our Survivor Outreach Program sends trained volunteers to provide support to suicide loss survivors in their home. This community support has proven to be vital in helping loved ones process their loss, get connected with support services, and help begin the journey to heal.
We hosted the annual Massachusetts Advocacy Forum where we represented AFSP and visited congressmen and Senators to advocate for mental health parity and suicide prevention and education.
These are just a few of the achievements we made last year, none of which could have happened without the support of our sponsors and our Out of the Darkness Walkers who helped raise funds.
Any individual walker who raises $1,000 or more will join the exclusive LifeSaver Club and earn an AFSP prize at the walk
Any Team who raises $5,000 or more will earn a Team Banner
Additionally, check out these amazing National Incentives:
Raise $150 by 09/22/2018 and receive a 2018 Out of the Darkness Walk T-shirt!
Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in additional cash or check donations at the registration table the day of the Walk.
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.
The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance and a walk that unites a community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. We all wear honor beads - each color shows our personal connection to the cause, and helps us identify others who understand our experience
PAWS FOR PREVENTION
Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome at the event. AND - with a $10 donation, you can pick up an AFSP Pooch bandana at the Paws for Prevention Tent.
