WALK ROUTE

The walk route is approximately three miles and is around Lake Hollingsworth. You may walk for as much or as little of the walk that you’d like.

BECOME A SPONSOR!

Download the Polk County SPONSORSHIP PACKET. With sponsorship opportunities starting at only $250, this is a perfect opportunity for large and small businesses to play a role in making suicide prevention a priority in the community. All sponsors will receive marketing and publicity benefits!

MEMORY SIGNS

Dedicate a sign in memory of a loved one lost to suicide. These signs will be placed along the walk as a memorial to those we have lost and as a reminder of why we fight to bring the issue of suicide out of the darkness and help those who may still be struggling.

For a $50 donation, a sign will be created in memory of your loved one and personalized with a message or quote. After the Walk is finished, you are welcome to take your sign home.

WHY FUNDRAISING?

Although fundraising is optional and there is no minimum fundraising requirement (and no fee to walk), each dollar raised helps us deliver suicide prevention programs both in Polk County and nationally.

There are 3 small things you can do to kick-start your fundraising work:

Personalize your walker page online. Telling your story will make those who see your page feel more emotionally connected to you and the cause. If you're a team captain, be sure to personalize your team page!

Donate to yourself, even if just a modest sum of $20, to show others you are committed to the cause. It's easier to ask others for money if they see you have also donated.

Share your page and story with others. It's OK to ask for donations! And you may have to ask several times – that’s OK too!

You are also welcome to hold your own third-party fundraiser and use those funds raised toward your individual or team goal. Contact us for supporting your private fundraiser: PolkCountyOOTDWalk@gmail.com

This website is designed for online donations. On the day of the walk, you can also bring cash or checks (made out to “American Foundation for Suicide Prevention” or "AFSP").

And don’t miss our Walker Central website for some great tips and some great social media apps to help you promote your walk participation.

T-SHIRTS

Raise $150 by 12/01/2018 and receive an official Out of the Darkness Walk T-shirt!

Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in additional cash or check donations at the registration table the day of the Walk.

Teams that raise $1,000 or more by 11/2/18 will get their team name added to the back of the official Polk County Out of the Darkness Walk t-shirt.

RESOURCE FAIR

Make sure to arrive early to allow time to explore the resources area.  Information tables hosted by local businesses and non-profit organizations will open at 9 am.  This will be an opportunity to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES

Children are welcome! We will have a “Bubble Poem” reading and will have free bubbles.

HONOR BEADS

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance and a walk that unites a community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. We all wear honor beads - each color shows our personal connection to the cause, and helps us identify others who understand our experience

Thank you for your support! We look forward to seeing you at the walk!
