Welcome to the Out of the Darkness

Waynesburg University Campus Walk

03/16/2019

We are so excited to bring the Out of the Darkness Campus Walk back to Waynesburg University for its 2nd year and for our campus's Day of Service! Last spring, we had 200 walkers -- a mix of students, faculty, and community members -- join the event to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention. With some of last year's funds, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has already trained all of our Resident Assistants on both its "Talk Saves Lives" and "It's Real: College Students & Mental Health" programs with more education events on the future calendar too. This year, we hope to get more student clubs and teams involved and doing fundraising for the walk, as well as helping us fight the mental illness stigma and make people feel empowered to seek help when struggling or in crisis.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE WALK

The Out of the Darkness Walk seeks to provide hope for those struggling and those who have been touched by a suicide loss. We will have many pre-walk activities as well as some post-walk programs too. The walk will kick off with a brief opening ceremony from inside the gymnasium. The walk itself weaves through campus and is approximately 5K in length, not competitive. The walk will happen, rain, snow or shine!

ACTIVITIES OF HOPE AND HEALING

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. We will provide free honor bead necklaces at the event for you to select and wear:

We'll announce many other pre-walk activities as we get closer to the event date. If your student organization would like to get involved by hosting a walk activity, please contact our walk chair Briana (contact information at top of page).

Online registration closes at noon the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until June 30th.

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
