Welcome to the Out of the Darkness Rochester NY Walk

2018 Opening ceremonies included a gentle stretching and meditation session with local yoga instructor, Donna Nupp.

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.

Click the Register Now button at the top of the page to get started right away.

Walk Route

Our walk route will be the one mile paved inner loop around the school campus. It is accessible to everyone including those with strollers and wheelchairs. Everyone will have the option of walking 2 laps or enjoying music and learning great information from our community partners while waiting for those who do 2 laps to finish.

*Due to school policy, only certified service or therapy dogs are allowed on the MCC Campus.

Activities of Hope and Healing

We all walk for different reasons. Maybe we have lost a loved one to suicide. Perhaps we walk because we live with a mental health condition. Some of us walk in support of a loved one. The one thing that connects all of us is a desire to stop suicide.

It is our goal to honor all of the reasons our community members choose to join us on walk day. Whether you spend time in our Memory Garden, talk to our community partners in Chapterland about mental and physical wellness, or take a few moments to pause in our Zen Den, we hope you will find community, connection and inspiration to #BeTheVoice.

A glimpse of this year's Walk day:

Join us. When you become part of this family, you won't ever walk alone.

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.

There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones.

Thank you for your support! We look forward to seeing you at the walk!
