Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Registration is free and open to the public. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.
When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.
Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.

Registration and all walk activities will be located in Building 5 at Ankeny DMACC Campus.
Parking is available in lots M and L. There will be signs directing you to parking from Ankeny Blvd and Oralabor Rd. Handicap accessible parking is available.
The walk route is a flat path around the lake at DMACC that is approximately 1.2 miles. It is wide enough for strollers and wheelchairs.

Download the Central Iowa Sponsorship Packet. Sponsorship levels begin at $250, which is a perfect opportunity for large and small businesses to play a role in making suicide prevention a priority in Iowa. All sponsorships will receive marketing and publicity benefits!
There will be multiple agencies and companies from across Iowa present where you will have the opportunity to collect materials, hear about upcoming events, find out to get involved, and connect with them regarding mental health and suicide prevention.
We have multiple activities located in the courtyard south of building 5 for the whole family. Face painting, temporary tattoos, bead bracelet making, hula dancers, music, and more! Come early to enjoy the activities prior to the walk program at 2:00 pm.
Activities of Hope and Healing
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.
There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.
Memory Wall and Buttons
Please bring a small photo of your loved one to create a button to wear in their memory. This picture will be used in the button, so make sure it is a copy!
Bring photos or notes to add to the memory wall in honor of your loved one. These are always saved at the end of the walk, so make sure to grab your item before you leave if you want to keep it.
Be The Voice Store
Multiple t-shirts, sweatshirts, tank tops, and other AFSP items will be for sale inside building 5. Cash and credit cards accepted.
Water, popcorn, and light snacks will be provided to walkers free of charge. Restaurants inside Building 5 will be open for lunch options at a small cost.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones.
