Resources and activities at the walk:

AFSP Information Tent

Make sure to arrive early to allow time to visit the Education Outreach Community Tent.

This is a great opportunity to gather resources, hear about upcoming events and learn how to get involved with the Oregon Chapter.

Community Resource Fair

Please visit the resource fair!

We've invited other nonprofits who work in suicide prevention/mental health to have a free table at the walk!  Be sure to visit the resource tables so you can get additional resources and information that might be helpful for you.

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.

There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.

AFSP Store:

Come by the AFSP store to pick up your HOPE or "Be the Voice to #StopSuicide" merchandise!  All proceeds will help us reach our fundraising goal!

Why I Walk Bib

Why I Walk Bib:
For a $1 donation, receive a Why I Walk Bib to share your reason for walking.

Wall of Hope

Visit the Wall of Hope to write a message of encouragement to someone who might be struggling.

Paws for Prevention:

Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome at the event. AND - with a $5 donation, you can pick up an AFSP Pooch bandana at the AFSP Store!  If you are bringing your four legged friend, please be sure to bring supplies to clean up after them!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Where will we be walking?

A: The route follows the "Waterfront Loop" and is about 3.5 miles long.  Click Here for a map of the route!

Q: Is the route stroller or wheelchair friendly?

A: Yes!  The route does have some stairs when we go from the Rose Quarter to the EastBank Esplanade and again at the Hawthorne bridge but there is also a ramp for wheelchairs and strollers. We do cross the steel bridge which is not paved but grated metal and should be suitable for most strollers and wheelchairs.

Q: Can I bring my dog?

A: Absolutely! Friendly, leashed dogs are welcomed at the event! Please note that we expect approximately 3,500 people so if your four-legged friend doesn’t do well with crowds, it might be best to leave them home. Please bring supplies and pick up after your pet if nature calls along the walk route.

Q: Can I bring my kids?

A: Yes!  We do our best to create a family friendly environment.  The music is clean and family friendly and our speeches are all reviewed for safety. With that said, we do discuss suicide and mental health which are topics that may be difficult to discuss with your child.

Q: What is the Out of the Darkness Walk?

A: Glad you asked! We made this short video to explain it. The walk is totally free but it is the most important fundraising event for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Q: Where do I park?

A: $10 parking will be available at the Garden and East garages on the Rose Quarter property.  Street parking near the Veterans Memorial coliseum is also available.

Thank you for your support! We look forward to seeing you at the walk!
