We have changed the FGCU Out of the Darkness Campus Walk to a Virtual Walk to keep in line with the FGCU’s social distancing  policy during the response to COVID19.  

We will NOT be gathering at the SOVI recreation center on Sunday, March 22nd For the FGCU Out of the Darkness Walk.

You can participate in the virtual walk at any time from any location on either Saturday, March 21st or Sunday, March 22nd

An alternative to walking could be to create a poster or drawing,  picture or video to share your message of hope and healing.  You can share your pictures and videos of how you are participating in the virtual walk on social using the hashtag #FGCUOutofDarkness #CLASP #FGCUAFSP or you can email your photos to [email protected].

We know that these are uncertain times, and if you are feeling anxious please see the blog post from AFSP’s Doreen Marshall, Ph.D., on how to take care of your mental health in the face of uncertainty as well as 8 ways to manage our anxiety surrounding coronavirus

In the meantime there are still ways to continue to raise awareness and funds for the cause!

- Be on the Stream Team! Stream to raise funds and show everyone what you are doing instead of walking on that day. You can also go on Facebook Live or IGTV to share with everyone on social.

You can still receive a free shirt for raising $100 online!

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental health condition can sometimes feel as if no one understands what you are going through. Wearing honor beads the day of the walk is a way to show each other that we are all connected to the cause, and that no one is alone.

There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.

The Out of the Darkness Campus Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. 

Online registration closes at noon the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until June 30th.

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
