Together to Fight Suicide: Gibson County Out of the Darkness Experience

HOPE and HEALING are not Canceled and Neither is the Out of the Darkness Experience

While, the Out of the Darkness Gibson County Walk is going to look different this year, our mission to Save Lives and Bring Hope to Those Affected by Suicide has not changed. We aren’t able to all gather together at Bicentennial Park this year, but we are a strong and resilient community, united in our effort to fight suicide, raise awareness, educate our communities, support those who have lost loved ones, and support those with lived experience. We use our voices and share our stories to provide hope. We invite you to join us this Fall for an Out of the Darkness Experience.

We are still encouraging everyone to connect in our community, just in a different way. We aren't able to gather at Bicentennial Park but there are many other ways we can show our support for suicide prevention. You can walk in your favorite park, make your loved ones favorite meal, workout, do a relaxing activity, have a Zoom party with your team, or any other healing and connecting experience.

Pick up times for honor beads, AFSP resources and bracelets can be found below. 2020 Gibson County Out of the Darkness Shirts will be mailed to individuals who raise $150+.

No matter what the future holds, we know that we can still connect and stand in solidarity with one another in support of the cause. Whether you sign up as a walker or virtual participant, you are sending the message that nothing will stop us from working to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a bold goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.

Community Resources

It is important to be proactive about your mental health during uncertain times. If you or someone you know has a mental illness, is struggling emotionally, or has concerns about their mental health, there are ways to get help. These resources can be used for support in addition to situations of crisis. You are not alone. We are in this together.

Raise $150 by 10/04/2020 and receive an official Out of the Darkness Walk T-shirt!

Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in additional donations the day of the Walk.

Activities of Hope and Healing

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.

The Out of the Darkness Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
