Welcome to the Out of the Darkness West Essex Experience
While the West Essex Out of the Darkness Walk is going to look different this year, our mission to Save Lives and Bring Hope to Those Affected by Suicide has not changed. We are a strong and resilient community, united in our effort to fight suicide, raise awareness, educate our communities, support those who have lost loved ones, and support those with lived experience. We use our voices and share our stories to provide hope.
We invite you to join us virtually on Sunday, November 1st for our statewide New Jersey Out of the Darkness Experience. We are in the process of planning a special virtual event where we will come together to remember loved ones lost to suicide, embrace those with lived experience and honor the efforts of so many who work together to stop suicide. Everyone who is registered for a fall New Jersey Community Experience will be invited to join this event so there is no additional registration required. More details will be announced soon about this virtual experience including ways you can be involved.
Register Now and show the world that we are always #TogetherToFightSuicide.

Our community has always been the heart of the Out of the Darkness Walks. Your safety and well-being will always be our top priority, and we are closely monitoring CDC and local guidelines as we map out our options for bringing you an experience of hope and healing this fall.
Though there are many unknowns, there are a few things we know for sure:
You belong to a strong community united in an effort to fight suicide while showing up for yourself, recognizing and honoring those you love, raising awareness, educating communities, supporting one another, and sharing hope.
We remain dedicated to providing you with opportunities to connect, heal, share stories, create impact, and show you that you are not alone.
Mental Health and suicide prevention are more important than ever, and we’re confident that with your help we can reach more people than ever before.

We realize that nothing can substitute the experience of coming together in person, and we will continue to seek ways in which we can do that safely. We hope you will register and join us. One thing we do know is that HOPE WILL NOT BE CANCELLED and cannot be POSTPONED! If you have any questions, please reach out to New Jersey Area Director Elizabeth Clemens at firstname.lastname@example.org.
WAIT . . . ARE WE STILL WALKING TO FIGHT SUICIDE?
YES! The West Essex Out of the Darkness Experience is a real walk, but on your terms: you get to choose your own course, what time you start, and who walks next to you (within safe distancing guidelines)! The walking is real—it's the community that's virtual this year.
More great reasons to register:
All participants can create and join teams. This is a great way to motivate family, friends, and co-workers to join you!

Activities of Hope and Healing
Virtual HOPE Wall
We have created a virtual HOPE wall where you may post messages of HOPE and LOVE to inspire those who have been affected by suicide. Because we are not gathering in person, we created a virtual space to share messages of hope and love and share our Out of the Darkness Experience activities. Anyone can post to these walls, share stories or just take a look. These virtual walls will stay up until the end of the year, so make sure to check back! We will have to approve every single post to make sure all images and texts are safe, therefore it might take a few hours to show on the wall. Thank you for understanding!
Shine a light on suicide prevention and bring HOPE to your home. Order 2 luminaria for $25 and 4 for $45. Proceeds will benefit the AFSP New Jersey Chapter. This is a limited edition of 250 luminaria. Don't forget to share your luminaria with us on social media using #NJTogetherToFightSuicide and tagging @afspnewjersey. The luminaria can be purchased here and we will ship them to you.
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video. The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance and a walk that unites a community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. We all wear honor beads - each color shows our personal connection to the cause, and helps us identify others who understand our experience
- WHITE - LOST A CHILD
- RED - LOST A SPOUSE OR PARTNER
- GOLD - LOST A PARENT
- ORANGE - LOST A SIBLING
- PURPLE - LOST A RELATIVE OR FRIEND
- SILVER - LOST FIRST RESPONDER / MILITARY
- GREEN - STRUGGLED PERSONALLY
- BLUE - SUPPORT THE CAUSE
- TEAL - FRIENDS AND FAMILY OF SOMEONE WHO STRUGGLES
The Out of the Darkness Experience is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
