Welcome to the Out of the Darkness Ann Arbor Walk

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a bold goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.

Click the Register Now button at the top of the page to get started right away.

About the Walk

This year, our walk will take place on the Outer Loop in Gallup Park. This is a 1.65 mile walk. We will start and end this loop the Fast Shelter (near the Gallup Youth Fishing Pond). This walk is stroller and wheelchair accessible.

Friendly dogs are welcome on a leash. Please come prepared to clean up after your pet and be able to provide water and food as necessary.

Activities of Hope and Healing

Memory Tent

Walkers are encouraged to bring a photo of their loved one to post in the memory tent. We will be providing supplies to write notes and paste photos to boards. Other remembrance activities may also be included.

Hope Tent

This year, the Ann Arbor walk will be debuting a new activity – the hope tent. This will be filled with messages of hope for those who struggle. You will be able to write messages to others. Other spreading hope activities may also be included.

Community Resources

As in the past, we will have roughly 10 exhibiting community mental health organizations that will be sharing resources and information about their services, programs, and initiatives.

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.

The Out of the Darkness Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
