Welcome to the Out of the Darkness Watertown Experience

While the Watertown Out of the Darkness Walk is going to look different this year, our mission to Save Lives and Bring Hope to Those Affected by Suicide has not changed. We are a strong and resilient community, united in our effort to fight suicide, raise awareness, educate our communities, support those who have lost loved ones, and support those with lived experience. We use our voices and share our stories to provide hope. We are always #TogetherToFightSuicide

Are we walking this year?

Yes! And no.

Our community has always been the heart of the Out of the Darkness Walks and your safety and well-being will always be our top priority. This year, we will NOT have a traditional, full-on walk as in years past but here's what you can expect:

During your drop-in time on September 27th at Thompson Park, you can...

Pick up your t-shirts, Honor Beads, resources, and Luminaria, have your picture taken, and take a walk around the park on your own or with your team, all while following state and local guidelines.

  • For Contact Tracing purposes, we ask that you please preregister before coming to the park
  • Staff and Volunteers will be wearing masks and gloves
  • We will have hand sanitizer and masks available

What we will not be able to do on September 27:

  • Have an in-person Opening ceremony
  • Walk at the same time
  • Linger at the park
  • Provide food or drinks
So where does the walking part come in?

Great question and we are so glad you asked!

You are invited to join the Western, Central, and South Central Chapters on October 17 for a community walk unlike any other we've had. Your Walk. Your Way. Together to fight suicide.  The walking is real—it's the community that's virtual this year! It will be a Day of HOPE and Remembrance and we want everyone to be part of it. We will have meaningful activities the week leading up to the Chapter wide event so stay tuned and keep reading to find out how you can submit your photos, make a  donation for a Luminaria to light up the night, and more!

Please Help Us Spread the Word!

We encourage you to tell your story about why you support #AFSPCentralNY with your family and friends. Give them the opportunity to support you. You can post the Watertown Out of the Darkness Experience link www.afsp.org/watertown) to your Facebook page or start a Facebook Fundraiser right from your registration page! Need help? Visit walker central for tips and tools. Follow us on Instagram and share your photos using  #OutoftheDarkness #TogetherToFightSuicide.

How do I raise funds?

Ask. We recognize that these are challenging times but there are many people who are willing and able to support your efforts to Be The Voice for suicide prevention. After all, suicide prevention is everyone's business and we all feel good when we contribute to the greater good of others. Here are some simple tips to help you raise $200:

  • Put in your own $20 contribution
  • Ask your significant other for $20
  • Ask your mom, dad, aunt, uncle, or other family member for $20
  • Ask a friend for $20
  • Ask your supervisor for $20 (and let them know we'd love to do a free Talk Saves Lives program for staff!)
  • Ask 4 co-workers to give you $5 each
  • Ask 2 neighbors for $10 each
  • Ask a local business owner you support for $20
  • Ask neighbors if they'll donate their cans and bottles (400=$20)
  • Ask just one more friend or family member for $20

Need more ideas? Be sure to visit the Fundraising Tips and Tools tab under "Make an Impact"

Raise $150 by 09/27/2020 and receive an official Out of the Darkness Walk Experience T-shirt!

Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in additional donations at our drop-in on 9/27. Please bring donations in an envelope with your name and amount written on the outside for minimal contact, or use our onsite QR code to make a donation.

Activities of HOPE and Healing

Submit your photo for the Chapter Wide online event sharing why you walk here.

Sign our Banner of HOPE on 9/27 at Thompson Park

Pick up your Honor Beads on 9/27 at Thompson Park

What are Honor Beads? Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.

Save the date! November 21, 2020 International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day

We are always #TogetherToFightSuicide.

The Out of the Darkness Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
