What is an Out of the Darkness Experience?

The Out of the Darkness Walks are still happening, just in a new and creative way!

While we may not be able to gather and together in large groups this year, we encourage everyone to get out and walk in honor of the person(s) for whom they walk on Saturday October 24th in your neighborhood, local park, wherever you would like - and use this opportunity to bring messages of hope and awareness to the places we call home.

All registered participants will recieve a 2020 Out of the Darkness Podcast to listen to while you walk -- think of it as an inspirational and motivational sound track to have alongside you as you walk! It will include many of the elements of an Opening Cermeonies, and great tunes to keep you going!

Additionally, all registered participants are invited to join the AFSP Massachusetts statewide Out of the Darkness Experience virtually on Sunday, November 1st, hosted by NECN via Facebook Live.

Out of the Darkness Drop - in event  - October 24th 9am- 10am.

For those walkers and team captains who reach the $150 fundraising incentive level, your Out of the Darkness Walk Committee will be hosting a small Drop In Event on Saturday October 24th where they can pick up a goodie bag with resources, materials, honor beads, walker bibs, 2020 OOTD luminarias, and your fundraising incentives.  They will also participate in a memorial and healing activity, and have a chance to take photos at the OOTD Selfie Station.

Those eligible to attend the drop in event will be scheduled in to 30 minute shifts, and asked to follow all social distancing guidelines to ensure saftey and complaince with all CDC and local guidelines. (Shift assigments, location, and additionl information will be sent out a few days prior to the 24th)

Our community has always been the heart of the Out of the Darkness Walks. Your safety and well-being will always be our top priority, and we are closely monitoring CDC and local guidelines as we map out our options for bringing you an experience of hope and healing this fall.

Though there are many unknowns, there are a few things we know for sure:

  1. You belong to a strong community united in an effort to fight suicide while showing up for yourself, recognizing and honoring those you love, raising awareness, educating communities, supporting one another, and sharing hope.
  2. We remain dedicated to providing you with opportunities to connect, heal, share stories, create impact, and show you that you are not alone.
  3. Mental Health and suicide prevention are more important than ever, and we’re confident that with your help we can reach more people than ever before.

We realize that nothing can substitute the experience of coming together in person, and we will continue to seek ways in which we can do that safely, if possible. We welcome your ideas for gathering online and/or in-person this fall. Please contact your local chapter for more information.

Honor Beads

When you are walking this year, please consider wearing your honor bead color - t-shirts, ribbons, hats -- all are great exmaples of showing your "bead color"

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.

The Out of the Darkness Experience is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
