Welcome to the Gainesville Out of the Darkness Experience

While the Out of the Darkness Walks in Florida are going to look different this year, our mission to Save Lives and Bring Hope to Those Affected by Suicide has not changed. We are a strong and resilient community, united in our effort to fight suicide, raise awareness, educate our communities, support those who have lost loved ones, and support those with lived experience. We use our voices and share our stories to provide hope.

We invite you to join us virtually on Saturday, November 14th for the online Gainesville Out of the Darkness Experience.  We know you are passionate about the cause, so this year, as a Chapter, we will all be walking together on the same day as a community.  We will have an online ceremony for the Chapter on Saturday, November 14th.  Please make sure you check this page for the latest information and stay connected with us on our social media accounts for updates. Welcome to the Out of the Darkness Gainesville Experience

WHEN AND WHERE IS THE EVENT TAKING PLACE?

The ceremony for the walk will be online this year and will be streaming live at 10 am EST on Saturday, November 14th.  We are still encouraging everyone to connect in our community, just in a different way.  You can walk by yourself, or with your team, make your loved ones favorite meal, workout, do a relaxing activity, have a Zoom party with your team, or any other healing and connecting experience.

Reminders:

  1. You belong to a strong community united in an effort to fight suicide while showing up for yourself, recognizing and honoring those you love, raising awareness, educating communities, supporting one another, and sharing hope.
  2. We remain dedicated to providing you with opportunities to connect, heal, share stories, create impact, and show you that you are not alone.
  3. While our 2020 events may look a little different than what we’ve come to expect, our mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide has not changed. Mental health and suicide prevention are more important than ever, and we’re confident that with your help we can reach more people than ever before.
WHY REGISTER?
  • All participants can create and join teams. This is a great way to motivate family, friends, and co-workers to join you!
  • Registered walkers will be emailed updates and invites to e-vents in the upcoming months, as well as given the opportunity to participate for incentive prizes!
  • Individuals who raise $150 or more, will be shipped our exclusive 2020 Out of the Darkness t-shirt!
HAVING TROUBLE REGISTERING?

Having trouble registering?  Click here to view a step-by-step guide.  Refer to page 1 if you’re registering yourself, page 5 if you’re registering someone else through your own account, or page 8 if you’re signing up in person on the day of the event.  Be sure to also check out some of the Frequently Asked Questions on page 10.

If you’ve already registered and would like to either create a new team or join an existing one, log into your AFSP account and click on the “change team membership” option on the right hand side of your dashboard tab (on mobile you’ll need to click “dashboard” first).

IS THERE A FUNDRAISING MINIMUM?

No, but we strongly encourage each participant to set a $150 fundraising goal to help support AFSP's work to stop suicide and receive the official event shirt!  Anyone who raises $150 or more by September 30th, will receive their shirt by event day, November 14th.  If you raise $150+ after September 30th, you will still receive our official event shirt, but it cannot be guaranteed by Nov. 14th.

We all know how much our pets can help our mental health and our lives.  That's why we have our Paws for Prevention campaign.  Donate $20 and you will receive a doggie bandanna of your choice and a Paws for Prevention sticker!  Click here to get your Paws for Prevention goodies!

For 33 years, AFSP as led the fight against suicide.  It is the largest suicide prevention organization in the United States.  By partnering with us as a sponsor, you will allow the North Florida Chapter to fund life-saving research, create and implement educational programs, advocate for public policy on both the local and federal level, and support survivors of suicide loss.  By working together to improve the health and well-being of Floridians, we are connecting people to resources and programs, as well as removing barriers that stand in the way of people finding hope and healing.

T-SHIRTS

Raise $150 by September 30th and receive an official Out of the Darkness Walk t-shirt by e-event day on Saturday, November 14th! T-shirts will be mailed to participants.  If you raise $150 or more after September 30th, you will still be mailed a t-shirt, but it will arrive after the e-vent day on November 14th.

Donations can either be done online via the website at www.afsp.org/gainesvillefl or you can safely mail them to:  AFSP, P.O. Box 916294, Longwood, FL  32791

*Please make sure you include a note that has your name and walk location so it be credited to your account.

You can also download the Offline Donation Form and mail your payment to AFSP, Att: OOTD Walks, 199 Water Street, 11th Floor, NY, NY 10038.

TEAM INCENTIVES
  • Walk teams that raise $1000 or more online by September 30th will have their team name printed on the backs of the t-shirts.
  • Walk teams that raise $1,000 or more online by Friday, October 16th will have a handheld TEAM NAME SIGN printed and mailed to them!
  • The overall Top 3 Teams as of Friday, November 13th at NOON will be featured in our Opening Ceremony (Saturday, November 14th from 10 am – 11 am).

Activities of Hope and Healing

Virtual HOPE Wall
We have created a virtual HOPE wall where you may post messages of HOPE and LOVE to inspire those who have been affected by suicide. Because we are not gathering in person, we created a virtual space to share messages of hope and love and share our Out of the Darkness Experience activities. Anyone can post to these walls, share stories or just take a look. These virtual walls will stay up until the end of the year, so make sure to check back! We will have to approve every single post to make sure all images and texts are safe, therefore it might take a few hours to show on the wall. Thank you for understanding!

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.

We will not be distributing honor beads this year due to the safety of our volunteers and walkers.  You can wear honor beads from previous years, purchase them inexpensively online (like on Amazon), or wear the color representing your loss-such as t-shirt, ribbon, etc.

 

The Out of the Darkness Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
