Activities of Hope and Healing
Losing someone to suicide or caring for someone struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. The Washington, D.C. Walk is a journey of hope and healing that unites our community and acknowledges the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. We will be sharing walkers' stories in our opening Honor Beads Ceremony and have many opportunities and activities for you to share your own and honor a loved one. Honor and Remembrance activities will include:
Make Your Own Honor Button: Bring a photo of the person(s) for whom you walk in honor of and create a keepsake that you can wear throughout the day and bring with you to cherish always.
Luminaire: Bring a photo of the person(s) for whom you walk in honor of and create a luminary for your loved one(s) that will be placed on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial (in front of our stage) so it can be displayed during our Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
Remembrance & Honor Chain
Remembrance Book: Memories are our precious keepsakes of the loved ones we love so much. Please bring a picture, quote and/or special poem for your loved one that can be included in the Remembrance Book.
Be sure to arrive early to allow time to explore the Resources Fair where you can find information tables with resources hosted by local organizations. This will be an opportunity for you to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness about mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support for survivors of suicide loss and those with lived experience.
If you are with an organization that is interested in participating the 2020 Washington, D.C. Out of the Darkness Walk’s Resources Fair, please fill out this Resources Fair Application and we will be in touch with you soon with more information.
Family Activities Area
The Washington, D.C. Walk welcomes all ages to attend! Bring the whole family and enjoy fun activities with you little ones at our Children’s Activity Area! We will have arts and crafts, face painting and hair braiding too!
Paws for Prevention
Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome at the Walk. Be sure to stop by the AFSP Merchandise tent and pick up your best friend an AFSP doggy bandana so they can walk the walk in-style!
