The safety and well-being of our participants, volunteers, and staff is our top priority. We will be closely monitoring the safety guidelines and regulations given by the school/county/state, and currently plan to walk to fight suicide in our communities with friends and family on the weekend of April 24 and 25.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation, as well as your dedication to preventing suicide.
Welcome to the Out of the Darkness
Maryland Chapter Virtual Campus Walk
We at AFSP Maryland set a goal of tracking 47,511 minutes of activities by April 25 to honor every American lost to suicide in 2019. Can you help us achieve this goal?
Weekend of Action - April 24th and 25th
Walk - Make a plan to walk on the 24th and/or 25th in your neighborhood, in a local park, or on your campus. Ask friends and family to join you (following CDC guidelines), make posters, wear and old Campus Walk shirt. Don't forget to track your activities with the activity tracker linked to your fundraising page. Our goal is to log 47,511 minutes for every American lost to suicide in 2019. We are at 20,000 right now!
Talk - Share your story, your "Why I Walk", with others and on social media using #hopewalkshere #afspmaryland and tagging @afspmaryland. Or reach out to a friend to talk about your/their mental health and have a #RealConvo.
Fundraise - Ask for donations as you walk this weekend. Share your donation page link (social media, email, text) or livestream! 80 cents of every dollar donated go to AFSP research grants, educational programs, advocacy efforts, and support suicide loss survivors.

Dealing with the stress and anxiety during coronavirus may feel overwhelming. You may not have the same feelings as your classmates, coworkers, neighbors, family members, or others in your community — and that’s okay because everyone reacts differently to stressful situations.
In times of uncertainty, connecting with friends and family can really help in managing feelings of fear and anxiety, and be good for your health. Learn more at www.seizetheawkward.org
Activities of Hope & Healing
A Daughter's Journey
A Daughter’s Journey follows Sarah, a young adult, through her story of milestones, family, coping and positive growth after the loss of her father. She shares her story of hope, connection and resilience in the aftermath of a suicide loss.
Honor Beads (in the case we can have group meet-ups)
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental health condition can sometimes feel as if no one understands what you are going through. Wearing honor beads the day of the walk is a way to show each other that we are all connected to the cause, and that no one is alone.
There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.
The Out of the Darkness Campus Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones.
Beads will not be shipped to individual walkers. We can mail them to teams of 20 or more. For more information, please contact Area Director Kat Olbrich at email@example.com.
Online registration will be open until June 30 at midnight. Walk donations are accepted until June 30th.
When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.
As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
