Welcome to the 2021 Massachusetts Virtual Out of the Darkness Campus Walk

The Out of the Darkness Campus Walks are the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's (AFSP) signature student fundraising series, designed to engage youth and young adults in the fight to prevent suicide, the second leading cause of death among people ages 15-24.

WAIT … Are we actually walking to fight suicide this year?

YES! You can walk on Campus, in your Community (pending COVID-19 restrictions and following safe distancing guidelines) or wherever you are during the Massachusetts Campus Walk Weekend (4/24-4/25). You are also welcome to walk on any (or all) days leading up to our Walk Weekend! All registered participants will be able to track their active minutes using our brand new online Activity Tracker. Read on for more details...

While AFSP's Out of the Darkness events are going to look different this year, our mission to Save Lives and Bring Hope to Those Affected by Suicide has not changed. We are a strong and resilient state, united in our effort to fight suicide, raise awareness, educate our communities, support those who have lost loved ones, and support those with lived experience.

We realize that nothing can substitute the experience of coming together in person, and we will continue to seek ways in which we can do that safely. We remain dedicated to providing our participants with opportunities to connect, heal, share stories, create impact, and show those who struggle that they are not alone.

Why Fundraise?

Fundraising will help fund research to improve interventions, train clinicians in suicide prevention and advocate for policy that will save lives. The funds you raise will also bring AFSP's educational programs and Interactive Screening Program to local schools and communities.

A note about "Team Donations"... Donations can be made to a team, BUT the t-shirt and other incentives are based only on INDIVIDUAL fundraising. Any donations made to the team as a whole will not go to any of the team members' individual fundraising totals.

So please fundraise as an individual by sending friends and family to your personal page, and ask for a team "sponsorship" from local businesses, clubs, etc. and use it as a way to ask for donations during a team fundraising event!

DOWNLOAD and share your color(s) on social media.

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental health condition can sometimes feel as if no one understands what you are going through. Wearing honor beads the day of the walk is a way to show each other that we are all connected to the cause, and that no one is alone.

There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.

The Out of the Darkness Campus Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones.

What are you waiting for?? Click the Register Now button at the top of the page to get started right away! Online registration closes at noon the Friday before the walk. Walk donations are accepted until June 30th.

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
