The safety and well-being of our participants, volunteers, and staff is our top priority. We will be closely monitoring the safety guidelines and regulations given by the school/county/state, and will have an in-person walk and/or smaller in-person events as long as it is safe to do so.

Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in individuals 10yrs-44yrs old. We cannot ignore the impact that suicide has on the lives of our fellow students, faculty and Davis community members. The mission of Students Against Suicide and the Greater Sacramento AFSP chapter has been to foster a supportive and informed community.

We do this in order to foster community support to protect against suicide. Feeling connected to family and community support can protect against suicide. When someone is struggling with depression, anxiety, psychosis or substance abuse, these protective factors that may normally be strong can erode and weaken. When that happens, having friends and family to remind us our strengths can be a tremendous protective factor.

We are here to have a #RealConvo about suicide and mental health with the community.

If you’ve already registered and would like to either create a new team or join an existing one, log into your AFSP account and click on the “change team membership” option on the right hand side of your dashboard tab (on mobile you’ll need to click “dashboard” first).

And don't forget to use the Activity Tracker to be active while FUNdraising!

Creating a Team:

While walking alone or with a friend is a perfect way to partake in the walk, this is an event best shared with all that you care about. Fundraise together and compete against other teams to raise the most for suicide preventative research! We are unable to walk together as a community, but that should not stop our safe social groups from contributing to the virtual walk through sharing resources and getting out for a few minutes to come together against suicide this Summer. Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in additional cash or check donations at the registration table the day of the Walk (if happening in person).

Team Donations — Donations can be made to a team, BUT the T-shirt and other incentives are based only on INDIVIDUAL fundraising. Any donations made to the team as a whole will not go to any of the team members' individual fundraising totals. 

So please fundraise as an individual by sending friends and family to your personal page, and ask for a team "sponsorship" from local businesses, clubs, etc. and use it as a way to ask for donations during a team fundraising event!

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental health condition can sometimes feel as if no one understands what you are going through. Wearing honor beads, shirt, hat or scarf the day of the walk is a way to show each other that we are all connected to the cause, and that no one is alone.

There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.

The Out of the Darkness Campus Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. 


Online registration closes at noon the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until June 30th.

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
