The safety and well-being of our participants, volunteers, and staff is our top priority. We will be closely monitoring the safety guidelines and regulations given by the school/county/state, and will have an in-person walk and/or smaller in-person events as long as it is safe to do so. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation, as well as your dedication to preventing suicide.

Welcome to the Out of the Darkness

San Diego Chapter Virtual Campus Walk

04/24/2021

Join us for a Day of Action on April 24th! Our Opening Ceremonies will start at 10:00am PST. Directly after, at 11:30am PST, you will have the opportunity to join other campus walks across the Western Division, for a streaming presentation of It’s Real.

The AFSP-produced film and discussion It’s Real: College Students and Mental Health is designed to raise awareness about mental health issues commonly experienced by students. It’s Real conveys that depression and other mental health conditions are real illnesses that can be managed through specific treatments and interventions. It encourages students to be mindful of the state of their mental health, to acknowledge and recognize when they are struggling, and to take steps to seek help.

  1. Social Engagement: Connection.
We know not everyone uses social media, but in this time of physical distancing, social media is a way for our community to come together to support one another. We will host opportunities to connect with one another and share our on social media, twitch, and a virtual opening ceremonies, as well as a virtual presentation of It’s Real!

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental health condition can sometimes feel as if no one understands what you are going through. Wearing honor beads the day of the walk is a way to show each other that we are all connected to the cause, and that no one is alone.

There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.

The Out of the Darkness Campus Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones.

Online registration closes at noon the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until June 30th.

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
