Welcome to the Out of the Darkness

George Washington University Virtual Campus Walk

04/17/2021

While our Out of the Darkness Campus Walks may look a little different this year, our mission to Save Lives and Bring Hope to Those Affected by Suicide has not changed. We are a strong and resilient community, united in our effort to fight suicide, raise awareness, educate, support those who have lost loved ones, and support those with lived experience.

About Walk Day

The Walk is still happening, just in a new and creative way! While we may not be able to physically gather together this year, participants and their teams will be safely walking in their own communities (neighborhoods, parks, on-campus, etc.) on the same day, at the same time in honor of the person(s) for whom they walk and in commemoration of the 2021 George Washington University Out of the Darkness Walk. This is an opportunity to bring our messages of hope and awareness to the places we call home.  So, wear your OOTD walk t-shirts and beads with pride, hold up your signs of hope,  and share your experiences on social media using our hashtags  #StopSuicideNCAC and #StopSuicideGWU. Also, get your Customizable Campus Walk Social Shares to personalize and add some flare to your posts!

The Opening Ceremony will begin here on afsp.org/GWU 11:00 am.  Join us from your computer, tablet, or phone as we remember the impact of suicide, share stories of hope & healing, and take time to recognize all of our wonderful top participants and teams furthering our mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.

Following the Opening Ceremony, walk and take to social media:

  • Post photos and videos of you walking
  • Share your story
  • Include your fundraising link and ask people to donate
  • Use the hashtags #StopSuicideNCAC and #StopSuicideGWU

Team Fundraising vs. Individual Fundraising

Donations can be made to a team, BUT the T-shirt and other incentives are based only on INDIVIDUAL fundraising. Any donations made to the team as a whole will not go to any of the team members' individual fundraising totals. So please fundraise as an individual by sending friends and family to your personal page, and ask for a team "sponsorship" from local businesses, clubs, etc. and use it as a way to ask for donations during a team fundraising event!
