The AFSP-produced film and discussion It’s Real: College Students and Mental Health is designed to raise awareness about mental health issues commonly experienced by students. It’s Real conveys that depression and other mental health conditions are real illnesses that can be managed through specific treatments and interventions. It encourages students to be mindful of the state of their mental health, to acknowledge and recognize when they are struggling, and to take steps to seek help.

  1. Physical: Action.
One of the top most important parts of Campus Walk experience for our participants is usually walking around our various campuses and/or taking action for our important cause. We will keep you updated with more information, so stay tuned.

  1. Social Engagement: Connection.
We know not everyone uses social media, but in this time of physical distancing, social media is a way for our community to come together to support one another. We will host opportunities to connect with one another and share our on social media, twitch, and a virtual opening ceremonies, as well as a virtual presentation of It’s Real!

  1. Fundraising Milestones: Impact.
There is no fundraising minimum requirement for the Virtual Campus Walk. However, we encourage you to fundraise so AFSP can continue life-saving work and provide programs for suicide prevention. Your fundraising will impact the course of suicide prevention for years to come. Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental health condition can sometimes feel as if no one understands what you are going through. Wearing honor beads the day of the walk is a way to show each other that we are all connected to the cause, and that no one is alone.

There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.

The Out of the Darkness Campus Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones.

Online registration closes at noon the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until June 30th.

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
