We're moving forward with plans to host our Out of the Darkness Community Walks in person beginning fall 2021. The health and safety of our participants, staff and volunteers will be our top priorities as we work with local authorities to make decisions about event details, and we'll continue to offer options to participate online and in your neighborhood.

Now, more than ever, it’s important to be there for one another and take steps to safeguard our mental health and prevent suicide.

Register today to stay up to date on the latest news and announcements for the Howard County Walk.

#TogetherToFightSuicide

Registration is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted until December 31st.

Move in May Challenge

For Mental Health Awareness Month (May), we encourage you to TAKE ACTION and make your mental and physical health a priority! Register for the walk and start tracking your activities using the NEW! Activity Tracker that connects to your fundraising page. Get your mind and body moving! Go for a walk, meditate, lift weights, throw a dance party, or have a #RealConvo – do whatever makes you feel good!

Your chance to win!

Everyone who registers for the Howard County Out of the Darkness Walk and starts tracking their activities between May 1 and May 31 at 11.59 pm will be entered into a raffle for a "Mental Health Awareness" stainless-steel water bottle.

The Howard County Walk participant that tracks the most activity minutes between May 1 and May 31 at 11.59 pm will receive a $30 credit to the AFSP store.

The Howard County Walk participant that raises the most funds between May 1 and May 31 at 11.59 pm will receive a $30 credit to the AFSP store.

BONUS: Make sure to share your activities with us on social media using #AFSPMDmoves and tagging @afspmaryland. You can also email pictures to  kolbrich@afsp.org. Each Saturday in May (starting May 8), we will randomly generate one “Wellness Warrior of the Week” out of all 11 Maryland Out of the Darkness Walks. Pictures must be posted before each Friday at midnight to enter into the weekly drawing! Each week we will select a different warrior and award a $30 credit to the AFSP store.

We will provide weekly email updates on who is leading the activity and fundraising categories.

How it works?

  • Register for the walk for free
  • Start tracking your activity minutes and kick-off your fundraising
  • Don’t forget to invite your friends and family!

*Activities are being tracked in minutes to allow everyone to participate in any way they can. We/you cannot change it to any other unit. Minutes can only be entered manually, and the tracker does not connect to any other tracking devices.

Why Register?

Our community has always been the heart of the Out of the Darkness Walks. Your safety and well-being will always be our top priority, and while we remain hopeful that we'll be able to gather in person once again this fall, we are closely monitoring CDC and local guidelines and will continue to share updates in the coming weeks and months.

Though there are many unknowns, there are a few things we know for sure:

  1. You belong to a strong community united in an effort to fight suicide while showing up for yourself, recognizing and honoring those you love, raising awareness, educating communities, supporting one another, and sharing hope.
  2. We remain dedicated to providing you with opportunities to connect, heal, share stories, create impact, and show you that you are not alone.
  3. Mental Health and suicide prevention are more important than ever, and we’re confident that with your help we can reach more people than ever before.

Activities of Hope and Healing

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.

The Out of the Darkness Experience is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
