Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Registration is free and open to the public. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.

Note: SignUp.com does not share your email address with anyone. Volunteers will receive special t-shirts, refreshments and will still be able to participate in our walk.  

NEED TO KNOW

We would also like to make it clear to all those attending the walk that the Civic Center is a NONSMOKING park. There is no smoking permitted any where in the park. And we are asking out of respect and courtesy for others, there is NO SMOKING along the entire walk route. 

Registration starts at 9:00 am – come early in order to explore the different tents and activities!

Parking is behind the Civic Center off West Civic Center Road.

The walk will take place rain or shine.

Dogs are allowed on a short leash.

WHAT TO BRING

Layered clothing for any weather – and an umbrella!

Tent to set up an area for your team.

Any cash or check donations – checks should be made out to AFSP.

A photo of your loved one to place in our remembrance tent.

Please bring your own refillable water bottles as we have water stations for you, rather than disposable water bottles.  You can pre-purchase an AFSP water bottle online at www.afsp.org (go to the bottom of the page, click on "store" and then "essentials" to find the water bottle).  They will also be available for purchase at the walk.

RESOURCE FAIR

Make sure to arrive early to allow time to explore the resources area.  Information tables hosted by local businesses and non-profit organizations will open at 9:00 am.  This will be an opportunity to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES

Team Tent Area

Bring a 10x10 tent and set up in a designated area to spend time together before and after the event.  Bring picnic fixings for a wonderful lunch after the walk at the beautiful park.  Think of it as tailgating before the event!

Photobooth

Take your team photos with some of our #stopsuicide props to share on social media to spread awareness!

ACTIVITIES OF HOPE AND HEALING

Remembrance Tent

Be sure to bring a photo of your loved one to be displayed in the remembrance tent.  Write a letter to your loved one.

Hope Chalk Wall

Leave messages of hope for those who struggle with mental illness.

Honor Beads

Everyone will be able to pick up honor beads that represent their journey and connection to the cause.  We will also be doing an Honor Beads ceremony to highlight one person for each connection and share their stories.

Losing someone to suicide or mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through.  Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.

WALK ROUTE

We will start at the Civic Center grounds, exit the grounds at Garfield. Cross over Garfield turn right to Front Street. Turn left along Front Street. Follow Front street to the west all the way into downtown Traverse City. Cross Front street at Cass Avenue. Follow Cass Avenue to Clinch Park Tunnel. Go through the tunnel. Turn right and head east along Grandview Parkway back to the Civic Center. This is approximately 3.2 miles. (5K)
