On July 9, 2016, my beautiful husband, my bestfriend, and my favorite person, Jay Anthony Utz lost his battle with depression and untreated sleep apnea, and died by suicide at age 40.

While Jay struggled with depression, that wasn't all that he was. He was more than a statistic. He was more than one event. Jay was brilliant, generous, funny, and fun; he completely lit up the world. He was a husband, a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend, and a best friend. He was my favorite person, my confidante, and my co-conspirator for the 17 years we were together. He was the guy who could make me laugh so hard my sides would ache, and light up my world whenever I'd see him.  He's still my favorite person, and I miss him more than words could ever sufficiently describe.

On October 24th, our international team will walk (in the US, New Zealand and Japan) to help increase awareness. We will walk to help remove the stigma associated with seeking treatment for mental health issues. We will walk because so many others cannot.

We walk as a reminder that those who have lost someone to suicide have also suffered a loss equal to any other loss - whether it's from disease, heart failure, cancer, etc. We're oftentimes denied the same support of our community due to the stigma surrounding our loved one's passing, because as a society we are hesitant to discuss mental health issues - to discuss suicide.

Let's change that starting today and each day moving forward.

Our loved ones will not be forgotten. They will be cherished - their names spoken, their lives celebrated. Jay will be remembered.

We will not be forgotten, either.

All donations are 100% tax deductible and will help bring AFSP one step closer to achieving their bold goal to reduce the suicide rate 20% by 2025.

You can also support us by registering to walk with our team - just click on the Team Page from the toolbar above, and then select the "join our team" button.  If you're on a mobile device, simply click on the team's name The "Jay" Walkers located beneath my name.

Thank you!

I'm walking in the Out of the Darkness Austin Walk to fight suicide and support AFSP's bold goal to reduce the suicide rate 20% by 2025.
