We are joining the community of nearly 250k people walking in hundreds of cities across the country in support of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.
Suicide affects people and families eveyrwhere, but it has a disproportionate impact on the LGBT community and particularly LGBT youth. According to The Trevor Project, the rate of suicide attempts is 4 times greater for LGB youth and 2 times greater for questioning youth than that of straight youth, and LGB youth who come from highly rejecting families are 8.4 times as likely to have attempted suicide as LGB peers who reported no or low levels of family rejection. Suicide attempts by LGB youth and questioning youth are 4 to 6 times more likely to result in injury, poisoning, or overdose that requires treatment from a doctor or nurse, compared to their straight peers. Further, 40% of transgender adults reported having made a suicide attempt.
Quarryland Men's Chorus seeks to shed light on this issue through a performance of Tyler's Suite on November 19, 2017 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. Tyler’s Suite is a nine-piece choral movement dedicated to the memory of Tyler Clementi, a talented young musician who died by suicide after being bullied by his roommate during his first weeks of college. This powerful collection of songs moves audiences and singers alike and ultimately shines a light of hope for a safer, kinder world in line with the mission of the Tyler Clementi Foundation, which works to end all forms of online and offline bullying in schools, workplaces, and faith communities. Quarryland created this fundraising team to further our commitment to this cause.
