Community Walk. This year's walk will take place RAIN OR SHINE on Saturday, October 14th.

The walk route is just short of 3 miles. It is handicap accessible and restrooms are available near the walk ceremony site. Click here to see a map of Deep Run Park. The opening ceremony area is located in the field beside the lake.

Information tables hosted by local businesses and non-profit organizations will open at 8:00am. This will be an opportunity to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss.
Raise $150 by 10/14/2017 and receive an official Out of the Darkness Walk T-shirt!
Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in additional cash or check donations at the registration table the day of the Walk.
Bring your four-legged friend to the walk and with a $10 donation, you will receive a “Paws for Prevention” bandana.
From 8:00am-11:00am we will have "Remembrance Stations" set up. A table will be provided for you to "share your story," where you may bring a picture and a short story for others to read (protective sheets will be provided). Let us know for whom you are walking. When one leaves us, it is the memories and stories that we most remember. We want you to share those stories.
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.
The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance and a walk that unites a community and is a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. We all wear honor beads - each color shows our personal connection to the cause, and helps us identify others who understand our experience.
For those walkers who do not want to walk alone, we will have a Walk Buddy program; for nobody should walk this journey alone. If you are interested in volunteering to be a "Walk Buddy" for someone please email us at email@example.com. If you are going to the Walk and would like someone to walk with then email us or visit us at the "Walk Buddy" table.
Free activities for the kids!
Our younger walkers, and those who are young-at-heart, will be able to enjoy free craft activities at the Walk.
We encourage all of our walkers, especially those walking as part of a team to carpool the day of the event as parking will be limited. We will have off-site parking available at Godwin High School, 2101 Pump Road, Richmond, VA 23238. Shuttle service will be available between Godwin HS and Deep Run Park from 8 am to 2 pm courtesy of TNT Limousine.
*Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk during the check-in times listed above. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.
When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.
