Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Registration is free and open to the public. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.
When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

Roche is the music director for DC101 you know him from his on-air show weekdays 3 – 7 PM on DC101 and the “Doo Doo Time Spectacular,” which lights up the phones with a blast from the past weekdays at 4:30pm. He is a husband and father of 2 boys, loves Sebring cars, DC United, staying in shape by working out regularly, and is a passionate advocate and voice for mental health and suicide prevention. This will be Roche’s second year participating in the Washington, D.C. Out of the Darkness Walk and captaining his DC101’s One More Light walk team in memory of Chester Bennington of Lincoln Park and in honor of everyone who has been affected by suicide.
In 2017, Roche and DC101’s One More Light set AFSP National Capital Area Chapter (NCAC) records for largest walk team in NCAC chapter history with 177 team members, and largest fundraising team in NCAC chapter history by raising more than $25,000 to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. This year, Roche has set a goal to top his team’s own records and raise $30,000! You know her from her nationally-syndicated radio program ‘Live in Concert,” and popular BIG 100 segments like the BIG Workforce Block, 11 o'clock LIVE, and Lisa's Animal Tales. Lisa Berigan has been a trusted voice in Washington, D.C. for years and, this year, she has joined AFSP to #BeTheVoice for suicide prevention as emcee of the 2018 Washington, D.C. Out of the Darkness Walk. Please join AFSP in welcoming Lisa and come out to see her live on October 20th!

We will be running 2 school bus shuttles that will transport walkers from the Smithsonian Metro (Department of Agriculture Exit, South Building - 12th St. and Independence Ave. SW) to the Lincoln Memorial (Daniel French Dr. SW) from 12:30 PM - 7:00 PM.
WE NEED YOUR HELP! Without volunteers, the Washington, D.C. Walk would not be possible and there are a number of opportunities available for volunteers on the day of the Walk. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete this Volunteer Sign-Up Form. Please bring a picture, quote and/or special poem for your loved one that can be included in the Remembrance Book or used to create a Luminary Memorial to be displayed on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the walk’s closing ceremony (see example here).
The Washington, D.C. Walk welcomes all ages to attend! Bring the whole family and enjoy fun activities with you little ones at our Children’s Activity Area!
Be sure to arrive early to allow time to explore the resources area with information tables hosted by local businesses and non-profit organizations. This will be an opportunity to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss or mental illness.
Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome at the Walk. AND with a $10 donation, you can pick up an AFSP dog bandana for your best friend!
