Thanks for joining us for the 7th Annual Fairfax NOVA Community Walk. This years walk will take place RAIN OR SHINE on Sunday Sept 8th at main plaza at Fairfax Corner shopping center in Fairfax VA.
To find the location you can enter Palace Way in Fairfax VA into google maps, and the shopping complex will come up. The plaza is right in front of the RAVE Theaters (tallest building in the complex). There is ample parking in the shopping center grounds.
The walk route is just short of 3 miles. It is handicap accessible.
Dogs are allowed at this walk; we welcome your four legged friends - especially if they can also raise some money :) Pleases be mindful of the county leash laws, and be aware we will have hundreds of people there.
Registration begins at 8:00AM. We hope you will arrive early, so we can get everyone through registration before the 9:00AM opening ceremony.
From 8:00-9:00 we will have "Remembrance Stations" set up. Each station is intended for people with specific losses from suicide (example, loss of a child, loss of a parent, loss of a spouse/partner, loss of a sibling, loss of a relative/friend). We will also have a station for those like me who live with a mental illness. At each station walkers will receive colored beads to identify their situation (example, red beads to identify one has lost a spouse/partner). For those who are comfortable doing so, we welcome walkers to bring signs remembering their loved one. The photo below is an example of one sign.
The opening ceremony will include 4 guest speakers, each with a different focus on AFSP's mission which is to: work public policy issues, provide education on suicide prevention, support research that will help prevent suicide, and provide survivor support. We will upload our day of walk program with the agenda, speaker bios, and walk route not later than Monday August 26th.
The walk will begin about 9:30. Most walkers should be able to complete the walk route within 1 hour.
We hope all walkers will stay around for a short closing ceremony, which will incorporate the remembrance signs.
We plan to take a group photograph right after the opening ceremony, and before the walkers start on the route.
As the stores are closed, porta potties will be available on site (plan accordingly).
We hope this day provides you a chance to come together with family and friends, and to meet others who are understanding of and supportive of AFSP's mission. After the closing ceremony we encourage you to remain on the grounds for some camaraderie. Restaurants on the grounds will open at 11:00. Pot Belly sandwiches, which is right next to the plaza will offer a free fountain drink of cookie to each of our walkers with the purchase of a sandwich.
Finally, Pot Belly will be donating 25% of its sales made between 5:00 and 8:00PM on Tuesday August 27th. We hope many of you will make plans for dinner at Pot Belly that evening.
